Can i put a car silencer on my bike?
« on: January 08, 2009, 04:25:25 PM »
I recently bought a Mac 4 into 1 header and have to buy a silencer for it. My question is can i use a car muffler for it. I am only asking because i dont know the amount of backpressure i would need in order for the engine to run right.  I was looking to pick one up at autozone and it would be a 2 1/4 inner diameter. Has any one done this? Will it feel bogged done or be too loud? Please great minds of the SOHC site help me! ( Oh i also plan on running with pods, a tooth smaller front sprocket, and a some bigger main jets.) Thank you in advance.

i thought about doing the cherry bomb on my  71 750, the no name 4 1nto 1  sounded like dog sh*t   and they actually make one with an angled inlet that would make a nice up sweep but i feared that too sounding like crap so i waited till i found a kerker

still have the other 4 into 1 header thehun  might be a mac  if your interested needs some elbow grease but im sure we can make a deal

Borla and Flowmaster both make round/Bullet type mufflers for race cars that you could easily adapt to a bike if u wanted..

thank you all soo much for the posts, any idea if the lack of back pressure would be an issue? Also, Cherry bombs are only like 20 bucks, i think im going to go that route, i just wish they werent red, i have to rethink my color scheme now

I'm looking at non motorcycle muffler options, like those found on snow vehicles for my bike. I'd like to buy or fab something that can fit under the bike, eliminating the side pipe altogether

Look up cherrybombs website they have many different sizes and you could get one that I bet would be close to stock with the right homework. Does anyone have the cfm's of the stock pipes, or atleast one pipe then x 4.....
I am getting a header in on monday and I want to add a cherry bomb on the back just like what lumbee did, there is a few more members here that have done it already too and I don't remember how much they had to retune their sleds...
The pic below is from cherrybomb's website. 8)

I used a cherry bomb on my 78 750F. It sounds great. Almost a little too quiet for me though.(I'm used to open pipes) It has a nice quiet idle but it really growls when you get on the throttle.
I may make another one and use a shorter or smaller diameter tip.
I cut and welded it to fit. I will post pics when i get home.

Hey rookierider. If you don't like the color paint it with high temp paint. Also if you search on ebay for glasspack there are different brands that don't come red. I had a friend use an old thrush muffler on his 750. Looked cool and worked great without even a rejet if i recall. Could have been louder though.
