Primary Shaft Removal Options 74 550
« on: January 23, 2009, 05:35:31 PM »
I've read the few posts that deal with alternatives to using the Honda primary shaft hammer/weight hammer. Two options were discussed: first, using engine case bolt to make your own puller; second using a drift to tap out from the oil pump side.

Now, I may be crazy but the 8mm engine case bolts are nowhere near the right size. So that option is out. For the next option, I want to be sure of what I'm trying to accomplish before I start banging on stuff. Do I understand correctly that, as seen in the photo below, the end of the primary shaft is inset of the bearing on the oil pump side? It doesn't seem like a lot of room to get something on the edge of that shaft. I'll bang on it if you tell me to (I know, that's what she said).

Ideas/input/cajoling?

Not an engine case bolt but the large engine/frame mounting bolt.
The long lower rear frame bolt it the correct thread and long enough to allow a large 1/2" drive socket to act as a slide weight.

Well, that makes more sense, doesn't it? Only I don't have one. The rest of the bike is 2 hours away. Guess I'll have to get creative.

Get a soft metal drift and tap on the bit of bearing you pictured, the shaft isnt a tight fit and will slide out easy

Alright, guys, I got it sorted out with a combination of brass drift and homemade shaft hammer (I just like saying "shaft hammer"). Thanks for the input.
