Welcome in the new era
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:41:27 AM »
It is official.  No matter how you voted it would be hard to argue that the speech and ideals represented in it were not what this country needs right now.  Probably one of the most powerful inaugural speeches in our history.

Good luck to the new president.  There is much work to be done and many unwelcoming individuals/ groups in the arena.

Yeah but can he live up to the hype??? I mean even if he could walk on water he would be a failure.

I don't envy him but I do hope for your (U.S.A.) sake and mine that he can right the ship somehow...

Hopefully people can move the way we need to. I wonder though. So many people are divided that I wonder if we can ever unify an anything anymore. Some just always want it the "old" way even though the old way no longer works.

I hope the us can pull together on things for ALL our sakes.

I think the question is can we live up to the hype? I, for one, am ready for a return to an America that is defined by the spirit and determination of its people, not its leaders.

It depends on how you look at it. The last 8 years could not have been much worse for our country. We lost a lot of freedoms and are in a war that never needed to happen. Much of this has been done by bush and his cronies. How do you expect people to feel? I may be wrong but I doubt there has been as much of an anticipated inauguration as this one. Not just cause a black man is getting in but because bush is FINALLY gone.
Many of the people in this country finally have some hope that things will begin to turn around for us. now if all the republicans can work with the rest of us like they expected us to work with them, we may have a chance.

I'm not a fan of Bush but didn't want this thread to dwell on the past.  Today's speech was all about the future and the hope for progress it holds...  no room for trash talking if we are going to get things fixed.

+1, Good luck Mr. President.

+2.

Regardless of how we voted, he's the man in charge now. He has a tough road ahead of him, between the current (and obviously divisive) issues and the intense scruitiny he will undoubtedly be subjected to. I think it was Harry Truman that was once quoted as saying upon leaving the office, "No man in his right mind would want the job of the President" (or something to that effect). I didn't vote for him either, but until he does something that really offends and turns me away, I wholeheartedly support and hope the best for him. We should look back on the previous administration not to cast blame but to learn from the mistakes so we (as a country) don't make them again. I agree that we need to move forward. Simply dwelling on the last 8 years and pointing fingers won't make the problems go away. I want to do my part because I want to better America- not simply because I hate Bush.

From a historical standpoint, I'm proud of the fact that the U.S. was willing to elect a "non-white" leader. I say it this way as many people are arguing if Obama's bi-racial heritage qualifies him as "black" or not.. to me that's not really the issue. This is a step-change that should be recognized, politics aside.

Ya know, I was starting to get disillusioned with the whole "last best hope" movement, thinking that it's too much of a burden for one man to bear.

Then I watched his Inaugural Address, and WOW!

The man is a rare combination of optimist and realist.  He knows the challenges he will have to face, and he is willing to face them with a positive attitude.

I think he means not by force or anything like that but by example. I bet if we were to travel abroad, we would see that almost all the world now hates the US. I guess I would like to turn that around. Maybe he also meant getting the US caught back up in tech and education and churning out minds that can lead us in the right direction.
