captain,
id like to think that it is a custom rear section; the entire rear section was chopped off and the swingarm was lengthened by six full inches.  of course i know what you mean...  once i get my shop cleaned up i will take a few pics and fill everyone in on my plans.

This is a great thread.  I really appreciate seeing progress pics.
So SPDIII please explain how you take it from here:

to here:

Is that a whole different frame?  or do you chop off some parts of the rear end of the bike and weld additional tubing to the orig frame to "hardtail" it?  I really want to try a project like this, but as you can tell, I need to aquire some know-how.  Thanks in advance,  ;)

I chopped off some parts of the rear end of the bike and then welded additional tubing to the original frame to "hardtail" it. I see now that I should have taken more pictures, however it really was'nt that hard to do. The trick is to keep everything square. After I cut away the aft section of frame, I was able to line up the new sections squarely by leaving the swingarm bolted to the front part of the frame to use as as a guide. This worked out well because the swing arm pivots, allowing me to correctly align the new tubing. I also had to make a jig out of 2x4's to level the frame because it did not rest flat & level (by design). The original part of the frame is not symetrical , to allow easy removal of the engine from the right side, so the points where the new sections of  tubing are welded (bottom of frame) are different right & left. It actually took longer to sqaure everthing than it did to fabricate all of the parts and tack them into place.

Where did you get the tubing for the frame?  What type of steel is it?  I got a welder for Christmas and haven't even fired it up yet, so forgive the noob questions...  gotta learn sometime.  ;)

I got the steel from a local supplier,  ALRO I believe. I told them I wanted 1" tube for my project and they recommended a seemless eighth inch wall thickness. Seems a little heavy cuz the original frame is more like 1/16th but I was able to work with it & know it won't break ;)

That bottom section of tube... does that have a bend in it? or is it two straight sections welded at an angle?  If bent... did the supplier bend it for you?  If you bent it... how?  I appreciate the knowledge sharing... thanks.

you can buy pre made bobber kits on ebay. Just have to weld them up.

I bent them myself using a vise and a torch. It's nice having the tools to DIY.

This bike really was the first bobber I liked.

I forget where I found the picture. But something I really like, and I'm not a big fan of bobbers. Glad you like it though.

Here's mine after reworking it some more with a smaller tank and fender and reworking the seat for the 4th time. Just trying to take it as far as possible without being able to weld a hardtail on.

BT650, even if it isn't a welded hard tail, I think it looks great. Someday I would like to build a nice bobber, just need to decide on a style I like, and BT yours comes close to the look I like. Definately food for thought.

Thanks for this great thread!

pretty sure I saw that build over at caferacer.net    think his screen name is pampador ??
If I recall he was working on internal throttle and clutch as well.

somehow the link isn't working, but, the title of the thread is:  " xs650 project (not a cafe racer) "   so do a search in the build forum.

Thanks Manjisann! I know bobbers aren't as popular on this site, so I'm just glad to get any feedback at all. I like the cafe bikes too, just wanted to try something different.

BT, I want one of each  ;D I like the cafe look, but there is also something to be said about the bobber look as well. The important thing is if it looks how you want. I am seriously beginning to toy with the idea of bobbing my CB500, I think it could possibly cost less than cafeing it, but I've been known to be wrong when it comes to money  ::)  I may buy a little CL or a smaller 4 to cafe, just for the kicks of it all.

Thanks for all the inspiration!
