Better Brakes for the CB500
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:55:35 PM »
I've got a cafe I'm working on and I'm looking to upgrade the brakes, because the last time I was on the bike, I about slammed into a car at a stop light. I picked up some lightly used parts off of a guy I know. That included some Tokico calipers off a '06 GSX-r 600 and some awesome 6-piston calipers and the matching master cyl from a Yamaha R1.
Now, the R1 brakes might be excessive. But I'd like to use the Tokico calipers if I can. The problem is, the calipers would hit the spokes if I made a bracket to hold the. I don't want to stray from the spoked wheels either.
Another option would be a brake setup from a 750. A guy at work has a 750 police bike for sale that I've been talking about getting off of him for a while. I'd kinda feel bad raping the bike for stupid parts like that, but, whatever. Does the 550 wheel fit in between the 750 forks, and would the rotors bolt up to the wheels to? If that would work, it would be much easier for me. Some help would be great. Thanks.

Brad

P.S. Here are the GSX-r calipers

Which 750? as the standard 750 single disc aint that much different from the 500/550 in stopping power
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

They are 4 piston calipers.
Do a search on "dual disc" on the site. Theres been alot of post about it lately.
I usually replace the whole fork assembly to get rid of the antique swinging caliper arrangement (usually GL 1000) to make the conversion "simpler" as the mounts for the caliper are in a better place for this type of conversion.
 These are 6 piston calipers.
1) GL 1000 forks
2) Yamaha 650 (tokiko calipers)
3) another Yamaha 650 (sumitomo calipers)
4) Janet Reno drooling when she saw my brake kits :D
There's a GL 1000 brake set on Ebay for the early GL forks that the owner had upgraded on his bike and is selling the old set.
