OK. I give. Help me source exhaust studs for a 750K model

Hey there,

I have a Kerker I'd like to mount to my CB750K5 and having a tough time finding exhaust studs for it to replace the sleeves and clamps set up.

Chatted with the local Honda shops and Tacoma Screw with no luck so far.

6mm thread / 45mm long is the best info I can find but that's off an eBay auction in the UK. I have one of the original screws in hand but does anyone know the full sizing?

Probably I'm just not up to snuff with my google foo. Where can I source these beasties?

I think I have 8 that will work.   There from a Kawasaki ZX7 Engine I scraped.
I'll check my garage tomorrow for you.  :)
If I can't see the Engine I can't see the point.......

I just got in the same spot 2 days ago.  I went to my local guy (Joe Foster at Performance Motorcycle in Hammond, IN).  He had 8 used ones for me (his last 8 - he said, "if they work, come back with 8 bucks").  That guy is my hero.  I give that guy a lot of my motorcycle budget - he's cheap, entertaining and knowledgeable.  I also picked up the gaskets from him (I'm not even gonna tell you the price).

Did you pick this exhaust up new or previously loved? If they are used then you may want to pull the baffle out and see if there is any glass in there, if there is not then the packing is like $8.00, if there is then you are good to go. You may need to re-jet for that exhaust as well.

If you decide that you want to pull the baffle out send me a PM and I will explain how I got mine apart. I don't have it back together yet as I have not scored the packing and I am out of town.

Hmm, used. Hadn't thought to check on the packing. There's a screw on the bike side of the pipe I assumed would release the baffle if I took it out. But I keep assuming things that aren't correct   ;D

Just for everyone's benefit would you mind detailing the process here?

You sir, are awesome. Not required (I think) as I'll order them up through my local honda shop if all it is are the studs from a 78. I appreciate the offer though. Gotta love this board!

I assumed the same, you know what they say about ass-u-me?

You are partially correct. That little screw will release the cone and it will come out the back. The baffle comes out the other end of the pipe where it slips onto the collector at the front of the pipe. I had a few people tell me that the whole shooting match slides out the back, and after much pounding and aggravation It came out the front. Put a piece of wood over the baffle and hammer the pooh out of it until it pops out the front.

If your baffle is toast you can buy a new one, they come pre-wrapped and with a new cone in 4 flavors, 1.5" stock, 1.5" comp, and I cannot remember the other two but they get louder....

OK. Happened to have to go to the same part of town Tacoma Screw is in so I took the original bolt and picked these up. The question now is how deep is the head?

These are about 45mm long and half the stud is threaded. Will they do the trick? I know I'll find out by trying but I'm getting weary of making the trek to the bike (it's out of town) just to find out I've got the wrong thing and have to wait another week (really, that's been .75 of rebuilding this thing).

Are the 78 studs a for sure thing? Cause I'd rather spend another few bucks than wait. Spring is coming!

And just for the benefit of future generations - what are the specs for these things if you were going to get them from Enco or MSC?

Duh, sent a quick email to DynoMan.net since they sell the pipe new. Hopefully they know and have some.

As some of the old CB750s came with studs you would be better off ordering the correct grade of stud through Honda. However the Kerker headers come with 8mm bolts that are used to mount them.

Which isn't completely explicit but I think I'll order up the 78k studs just for giggles.

Yup. F0 or F1 studs will work as well.

As far as the Kerker goes, the bolts it comes with should be all you need. I'd say wait for yours to come, then go hunting for bolts if you need to afterwards.

(PS - I found some studs that would work in my local Hardware store. Right thread and pitch and everything. Not saying they're perfect, but they would have worked if I had even gotten into a pinch.)

Buy some 8mm threaded rod and cut your own.
