Hmm, how about the 2 week trip with camping stops to read zen around a campfire?

ZERO COMPARISON!  :o

Personally I could never get through the drivel that is Zen and the Art...

I would take a 2 week road trip over pretty much ANYTHING!!  ;D

Let me rephrase this,
if you were to only do one of these 2 things, what do you think benefits the average rider more?

..............................................................................

I really do not even consider reading that on a bike trip, as something  to do on a trip..

  haha 754  :D

That's like asking 'which do you think is better - being served by Sams' friend or just thinking about it?'

Actually some valuable info in the book--
like making handlebar shims out
aluminum beer cans.
I guess I'd take the trip, though--
How about 3 days out--a week at the lodge and 3 days back.
Rides: 75 CB750F, 48 Indian Chief, 67 Triumph TR6, 63Honda CA95
          83 XL600R in CB360 Frame

Let me explain further..

The more I read anout ZAMM (on here), the less likely I am to ever read it.
I really cant remember if I did read it way back, or tried to and stopped.

I repeatedly see on here and in the book review that some say it gives wonderful insights of thoughts/things he experienced while on a road trip, but maybe I am getting it all wrong.

I do however feel there is a big FUNdaMENTAL difference in riders that have experienced to open road, and ones that have not. I heartily recommend that everyone liking bikes, should experience it (sportbikers might not enjoy it as much).

There is just a lot of the whole experience that is better felt than simply reading about it..

I realize some on here got into the game later in life or while circumstances dictate that heading off alone might be quite difficult to accomplish.

 Anyway, so I shall state my view;

I think everyone that thinks they like bikes should get some open road/sleeping outdoors time in on their bikes, and I do not mean being within a days ride of home and simple rescue.

And that no book reading will replace that experience... although it may help fuel the desire to do so.

Hope that clears up the intent of the post a little bit..

I think your initial question is unanswerable, it's too vague.

During December in the northern US, I'd much rather read a book than to try to take a two week road trip.  Reading is better than frostbite :)

If your real question is, which of these activities is a more enriching experience in terms of being a 'biker' then of course actual experience takes precedence over reading about experiences, and I don't think anyone would argue that with you.
