building cherrybomb exhaust system.......
« on: February 05, 2009, 07:35:35 AM »
I got a nice 4 into 1 header from mkramer1121 thanks again dude, I need to source the old style exhaust clamps that go with this style and I need to get the half moons too. Captaincrash80 said he would look and see if he had some but if now I need to source a set.
If someone had a set of them in good condition I would be willing to take them off your hands. I am going to get a cherry bomb pipe this weekend for the mockup. I also want to score a fat daddy fish tail tip for the chreey bomb, I noticed JC whitney has the tips with a section of pipe along with it , but I just want the tip alone.
This is the header that I am starting with

that is the same header on my 76 Cb750F.  It was attached to a Mac megaphone that blew a baffle......I attached a 28 inch thrush glasspack with an immediate turn down after it......sounds real good.  I had to cut the end I put on the header crossways to get four equal size expandable tabs to go over the inlet of the header.  I cut to fit the turn down and welded it on.

Those are some mighty fine welds you did; I am going to close up one of the slits that are cut into it, it looked like it almost went to deep. I'm also going to get some bigger bolts for the clamp on the #1, I will have ichy elbows soon too because I'm going to wrap them like you did your header spikey. Looks good that way.
I wondered if I would have to cut some slits in the muffler for it to work or if I could just add some heat to expand the tip just enough to slip it on, I figure I will know for sure when I bring the pipe home.
I also am going to have to relocate my rear foot pegs because of doing away with the stock exhaust(dookiedook already got dibs on them), I wondered what others have done when they came to this point. Do you just go for aftermarket pegs? I like the style of pegs and grips you have on your bike spikey and thought about matching up a set out of JCwhitney, I noticed the harley footpegs in JCwhitney look like they have a similar mounting style as the stock cb ones do.
What did ya'll do to compensate for the rear pegs?
I know rejetting will probably be necessary after this; I will see upon startup, after adding the k&n filter and opening up the bottom of the air box on top of freeing up the backside I figured it wiil lean out on me, not sure right now because the bike ran a little rich to begine with so I might come out peachy after this.
I was curious about the average cfm rate of one stock 431 pipe.....

to be honest i think i could have done better, in regards to those slits , i just had never seen one of those headers before so i wasn't sure what to weld and what to leave ,      and let me say this, who ever "fixed" that header before it was put in my hands , did NOT know what the hell they were doing  ;D  there was so much slag and it was welded in places where pieces don't even join  ;D i was laughing my ass off grinding all the poo poo away

my pegs are kuryakn ISO the mounts in the front are yamaha rear mounts , couldn't tell ya about the rear mine are gone

Cool, thanks for the input spike, it looked like you had to do some work on it to get it right. Looks good, you being a tattoo person like me it always sucks to have some work done and then the next guy doesn't want to touch it(I can't blame em I like the same guy to do it all), espically if the previous work was bad work like what you said you had to deal with on those welds. I got some tat work I'm waiting for the right guy that wants to fix it and then  fill the right side of my ribs like the left side has been done  ;)

really?  you're gonna wrap those?  with all that nice chrome? really?  wtf?  if i coulda gotten the clamp to work right i was gonna keep those... :D

they're yours now, do what you want.  You could probably by a muffler clamp to clamp the cherry bomb to the end of the header if need be.  No cutting required.  The other thing is jetting probably won't be an issue as it is a stock pipe, verify jetting between a '75-'76 F and your carbs prior to use.  As long as you run a glass pack and not open, you should be OK.  As for the fishtails, I haven't been able to find any large enough, you'll be stepping down from an outlet on the header of aroun 2.5" to 1.75" if you run one of these:

Hey goon, are you gonna snap some pics of the cherry bomb build part for us  ;)

I'd like to see how you're gonna do it. I wan't to build one for a 77F with the stock header in the spring.

How crazy does it get putting that header on a 73 K model? I have a nice one but it looks to hit the drum brake pedal. I have a wrecked 75 F and have considered moving the disc brakes over to the 70 frame to fit the header. Low on money right now long on time.

Thanks for the link mkramer1121, I was gonna give it another try today for a tip and that might do it, I will have to take a look at the pipe when I get it.
I was looking at reducers and hanger brackets and clamps in JCwhitney last night and wondered if I will need any reducers, I really want a fishtail tip....
I also will post pics of the whole setup for ya'll too see also as it comes along ;D

Hey goon def throw pics up when your done. im going to run the mac 4-1 on my 550 for now, but i was thinkin about geting one of these little glass packs and shortening my collector by about 6 inches and then welding this on. it would only make my pipe a few inches longer and there fore you wouldnt really need a hanger or anything.

Well I'm at a speedbump here, went to advance auto last weekend found a Thrush Glasspack not cherry bomb. Its huge compared to a cherry bomb and the baffle inside is very different, cherrybombs baffle's are more like louvers and Thrush's are more like perforated metal. I am taking this one back and possibly moving on to getting a whole new setup because its killing me taking so long to get this beast on the road...
Cherrybomb's website has a huge variety of glass pack sizes and i am going to give it another try and get like a 1-3/4" I.d on both sides and just get a reducer at the autoparts store for it to fit to the 2.5 opening on the header, at least then there will be alittle back pressure and I can then use the fishtail tip too.
Or if all else fails I can get one of these and get drunk, at least it has fishtail tips :P ;D
