Shifter seal problems
« on: February 15, 2009, 04:05:18 AM »
I have now gone through two shifter seals trying to install the dog gone thing. It is not the inside diameter of the seal I'm having trouble with, but the outside diameter of the seal. As I install this seal, and attempt to push it in the recess area, the outside part of the seal seems to be too large and just kind of peels back and tears. I am using a piece of 3/4 PVC pipe to push it in. I have thoroughly cleaned the area. I thought maybe taper the recess area a little, so the seal will "start a little easier" Any comments? 1975 CB 550 K

I picked up an aftermarket seal set for a 550 once and the shifter shaft seal was too large an OD. Honda part# 91202-KFL-841 is 13.8/24/5. More than 24mm is too large.

Check carefully the outer lip of the seal recess for burring and grease the outside of the seal. Try to get the seal started by hand first so it starts in "square"

Waller has a good point.  Just wondering if this is a Honda seal or aftermarket?  Some of those aftermarket ones can be a little off base.

Bevel the outside edge of the hole with a pocket knife. Worked for me.

You are supposed to use a "special" tool to install an oil seal.  A driver that pushes all sides of the seal at once.  If you don't do it this way, it will go in somewhat askew, and the side that goes in first will be "bit" by the seat.   I use a piece of PVC pipe(available at plumbing isle of hardware store) of the appropriate size.  As far as lubing it, a little 3 in 1(light oil)or motor oil will do.  I have had trouble with using grease, as it is a little heavy.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Hmmm...now that is strange.  I have installed a lot of those and never had an issue.  And it sounds like you are taking more precautions than I ever have.  I just used a little oil and a small punch and worked it in around the edges a little at a time.  Check to be sure there are not burrs or bad edges there.

Almost all seals that I have seen lately have a rubberized coating on the outside diameter and most if not all of it will peel or scrape off a bit as you install it.  Is this the stuff you say is tearing or peeling?  If so, I would think it's normal.  As long as you dont dent or distort the outside metal part of the seal, you should be OK.
