problems with headlight-high beams always on?
« on: October 10, 2005, 04:02:31 PM »
I just put in a new headlight and all was fine until I turned it on last night. Well first of all, when i turn the key to on the headlights mo longer come on. They only come on if I start it up & ride for a bit. I don't know if this is electrical problem or what. I just replaced the fusebox. Also when the lights do come on, the little high beam indicator is on no matter if beam is switched on or not. Then when I switch the high beam it does not appear to go high but there seems to be just a small voltage change. Maybe it is stuck on high already? Anyone can help? Thanx!

elcid,

You didn't mention if you had gone back through the wiring or not. Sounds to me like you may have switched some wiring up. You also mentioned putting a new fusebox on. So if you haven't already, grab the trusty clymers and trace the wiring from your headlight back. If you did this already I'm at a loss. The headlight is original equipment right?

Ok I figured it out. There was a little short with a brown wire that goes to the normal beam. I clipped off the male connectors & installed new ones that I got from my local auto parts store. Well the good news is everything works fine! When I turn the key on, the lights come on. I can also switch between lo & hi beams. BUT now I get the 15 amp fuse has blown 4 times in a half mile!!! wtf? The new wire male connectors I pinched onto the wires are for 14-16 gauge wire but the wiring seems to be 18 or 20 gauge. Could this be the problem? Does the gauge of the connectors have to match the wiring? ANything else? I think I am getting close...

You might check and correct for fuse clip corrosion.  There was a pretty long thread a while back tittled "wtf fuse box melted".   Do a search.
