Hippo Crit No No More...? With questions!
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:34:36 AM »
Howdy gals n guys. I hope everyone is riding or getting there.
I just wanted to write this. I have recently gotten rid of all the family vehicles (project or not) and we are down to the van and my 72' 750. Well I am working at at Rustys BBQ in Leeds, very close to Barbers Motorsports Park. Well I have gone from a cager with no job, to putting close to 120 miles on the bike a week now and I  it is nice to say that I do indeed now walk the walk. I have done cold and rain before but this week I got both, and while we all have our limitations I can say that mine is with my gear.
My boots retain water, my gloves are like sponges, and my rain gear is not repellent or gear.
As for any tips that I have not already searched here, I would love some feed back on gear that would be a good idea for Alabama, where the saying goes " If you don't like the weather wait five minutes..."
I am a used and surplus type of guy so any idea is useful to get the process going. All input welcome.

Wow that's cool. I rode 100% for many years when I lived in warmer climes like Tucson. But that was eons ago. Alabama should be pretty good?

Hopefully you can find some used gear, but the really good stuff may only be found new. owners usually keep the good stuff till its worn out.

I have waterproof gloves and boots, but hard to tell by looking, they have membranes internal to make them so. I use goretex style jacket and pants. The summer mesh jacket has an internal removable liner that makes it mostly waterproof. The heavier coats and pants are waterproofed, good for dry or wet. And warm too. All different brands, Joe Rocket, Mototech, etc. Alpinestars.

The point being external raingear is not needed.

If you can find a military surplus store, see if they have a gortex camo jacket. I had one issued to me in the Corps and that sucker will keep you warm, dry, and the wind out.

I just ordered a fieldsheer aviator from bikebandit for $60!  It's supposedly waterproof and a really good jacket.  They're on closeout, marked down from $150.  I'll let you know how it is when I get it.
By the way, I really like the fairing on the bike in your avatar.
Anyone know how to enlarge avatar pics?  Do they have to be in a gallery?
