Try these guys out; they may have something for you. I'm told they're on the up and up.

www.majorgeeks.com

Right now I have this: www.free-av.com

I'm told by some well informed sources (two geeks who do this for a living) there are pretty good free systems.

I've heard some negative stuff lately about Avast; I use to have it but couldn't say it sucked. I switched to SUPERAntispyware recently as per suggestion.

www.superantispyware.com but the Geeks here will be more helpful.

That does sound reasonable fuzz.

Once I quit using anti spyware I quit getting spyware. Every time I used the anti spyware I found the same crap. So I just removed everything. No more problems.

Spyware runs in the background Billy.  So stopping the anti spyware just stops the notification.  And let's be clear, virus's and spyware are two different things, and both should be stopped.  Spyware does things like track you browsing habits and make pop-ups happen regardless of the browser settings.  A virus can kill a computer and hijack your email address book and kill everyone's computer from your address book.

Every free antivirus program I've seen is a limited version.  And you must pay to get a full version.  So for my money, you might as well get the name brand.  The guru that I use says that Norton 360 is not just last years product revamped, but totally written from the ground up.  And the only one worth paying for.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Right now I'm using AVG free edition, and no issues.  Before that I was using some purchased A-V that didn't work (the name right now escapes me), and it was removed by the computer guy that took care of the virus that it didn't catch, and he installed AVG.
Before all of that I was using NORTON, and it slowed my computer down SOOOOOOO much it took over 5 minutes to boot up since it was basically doing a system scan every time I booted.  That just pissed me off so out it went.

+1 on the spyware 333 i doubt there is a computer anywhere that doesn't have spyware on it and i have 3 different spyware removal programs and they all pick up different spyware, none of the programs remove everything. Norton has been the "worst" antivirus for so long that i would expect them to make a claim like that. I have a mate that travels the world installing spyware for governments and he warned me NEVER to use Norton. I use Kaspersky anti virus and have never had a problem, it is a very efficient program, i wouldn't trust free antivirus, even if you are not using the computer much it only takes 1 virus to make the system useless.

I remember that about Norton! Sooo glad to be rid of it. Missed a bunch too. I had Kaspersky and I think I got rid of it just to try something else? Might go back to it. It seemed to do the job.

My Bro-in-law works in the computer industry (don't ask, it's all witchcraft to me) and he as well as others have said to me there are worthy free systems available. One person went as far as saying he'd never spring for the premium deal.

I know it's all hearsay, and I'm a proud analog kinda guy, so take it for what it's worth. Just my swiftly depreciating two cents.

Another vote for AVG free.  While you're at it, go to www.malwarebytes.org and download malwarebytes anti-malware software.  The free version doesn't offer real-time protection, but if you run it periodically, it will help you maintain a clean machine.

Had a couple friends tell me AVG and was all set to do it but for the free version they want you to sign up for something as in netflics, itunes crap like that.  If I have to pay I'll just buy something.  I have noton on this machine from my ISP and dont care for it. I had defender pro for a few years and liked the first version but the renewal sucked and then price went up.   Anyway thanks everybody I'll check some of these out.

I also ues a free online scanner called Bitdefender. You can only run it under IE, but it scrubs machines really well.

I use avg free also, so does averyone else in my office. We are all computer techs. I also use malware bytes, superantispyware and if I am working on an XP system, spyware terminator. Malwarebytes and spyware term will install in safe mode which is a HUGE help. I love programs that have their own installer.

I ued AVG free and adaware free for a while. I liked them so I got the paid versions. They work well, might as well pay some money if you use their services, nothing is free.

My son graduated in May from a very expensive but well regarded private university with a BS in computer science. I paid (and will be paying for many years) for this AV advice: AVG free. It's a great free program and works as well as the pay version. The pay version is for companies and governments that are not entitled to use the free stuff. JMHO.

I personally found I had less problems when I used the non-free version of both.
Both got pretty buggy with the free versions, each to his/her own.

Ok, I've had AGV antivirus free version for a few months now and recently, I keep getting these notices that the free version 8.0 needs to be upgraded to 8.5(?) and for like $50 or so.  Is this free version not available?  Should I pay them their fee and keep AVG or would someone recommend something else? If I'm going to pay for something, it's not gonna be because they said I have to.  ;)

uninstall AVG... then go to the website to download the free version.

by the way... getting the spelling of the name right on antivirus and antispyware software is VERY IMPORTANT!

at present, i am using AVG for antivirus and ad-aware for antispyware.

by the way... u must run auto scans or manual scans for anti-whatever-programs to work!

i run manual scans... i don't need a scan every friggin day, thank you.  that would be like going to the doctor everyday.  now, if you are a ho... i recommend seeing the doctor every day.   ;D
