talk me out of a 400
« on: March 06, 2009, 04:04:01 PM »
I let a 750 slip away...I know I could have gotten it cheap, the guy, he drinks a bit.
Procrastinated, (sp)?  ennyhoo...he says he has a 400. I know absolutly nothing about them, I never even seen one. I am ass deep in working on the 750's I have, but it's kinda callin' me..it needs a good home. I haven't seen it either, but.....

I can't talk you out of a 400.  It's my favorite SOHC and the bike that the 750 tries to be.

Get it.  You won't regret it unless you are freakishly tall or mightily heavy.

Can't be done.  I rode one once - for over an hour - when I went to buy it.  It was a bit too beat up for my tastes and I had another bike to look at that day (RD400 - bought it...).  I'd buy a CB400F in a heart-beat if I ever get the choice again.

That reminds me.  I was drinking and so was this other guy when I was about 17.  I had that dude willing to trade his 40 something Willy's jacked up real high (sweet looking) for my worn out XS11.  Next morning he was sober, he changed his mind cause he got his mind back, lol.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Well, there is no difference since there was only one 400cc Honda made during the years of interest here - well, only one 400cc 4 cylinder Honda - in 1978, there was a 400cc twin.  So, CB400 and CB400F are the same bike unless you are talking about 1978 models when a CB400 was a twin.

The first CB400F was a bored out 350 four in (semi) cafe racer trim.  Different tank, mainly, as they came stock with bars that were rediculous (IMO).  The '75 model is the only one to get because the colours are better and the pegs are set back just enough.

The speedos lie.  Too small to go 'crosss country, you won't hit the ton unless you have the stock airbox, but they handle great.  If they aren't thrashed regularly, they won't respect you and will pee in your bed while you're at work.

The -dammit, I'm having another Ernie moment- that chain in the left-side case;  it's easy to adjust but nobody does it, so the chain might be shot.  Or, the plastic that rubs the chain might be shot.  Some noise there is normal though...  Otherwise- just watch for all the normal stuff.

Very charming and balanced bike.
Not too much power in the highways, but a true delight inercity.
Oh, and the noise. Take of the stock pipes, put some slipons, and men, as sure as the day comes after the night, its the better and most exciting noise any bike can do.
I swear.
If you like sohc's, cant go wrong with a 400F.
Sory the bad english.

I bought a 400F from my neighbor.  It was a rescue, really.  Sad life it led.  Still, I resurrected it to run pretty darn well.  I had been riding CB550s for a good long while.
The 400F scared the cr@p out of me.  Wasn't very stable on it's own, and heavy breathing from sidewalk bystanders would nearly blow it over, or least cause an undesired lane change.
Engine power in a tight turn makes the front end even lighter and slide.  Wear brown pants while riding this bike, or avoid engine RPMs above 4000-5000 and above.

You sit on this tiny pile of squirrely machine rather than into it. Your inner thighs need very strong muscles to keep the bike from squirting out from under you.  Think about the bull riding machines, only one third the width and more bucking power.  So, unless you have thigh muscles like Xenia Zaragevna Onatopp, don't expect to ever be "as one" with this machine.
You can't hang on the the bars either, as any side forces make you apply pressure to the bars in a way that accentuates those side forces.  Basically, the machine takes a general clue from the rider and goes where it wants, and if you don't like it, too bad.

I sold mine a week after making it work again.  She wouldn't sell it back later.  ::)
