turbo on cavalier z24....anyone did this..???
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:59:03 PM »
I got a 1999 cavalier z24  and I  got a turbo from a 1.6 tdi vw   and also I got way to much free time.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
(I fired my wife,now I got time for projects... ;) ;) ;) ;))
Anybody put a turbo on a fuel injected car before??? could use some pointers on what it involves.......I know how to make a manifold etc to make the turbo fit with oil plumbing.....just wondering if the o2 sensor can keep the engine from leaning out,or if i need bigger injectors, super chip etc...???
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

bigger injectors, probably a higher flow fuel pump, adjustable pressure regulator would be helpful too. and using a tubular mild steel turbo manifold wont last as long as a good heavy stainless or better yet for a street car, cast iron as the heat makes the mild steel brittle way too quickly. and youll either need to reflash your ecm or go to a stand alone injection controller like fast or accel. holley makes a good one too.

how can I find out what injectors to use...?? do they make them specially for the z24 or could I use injectors from let's say a camaro...???
I will look into those stand alone injector controllers but it sounds pricey.........

Supercharge it man, internal combustion engines work better with Superchargers.
Diesel engines run better with turbos.

:D :D :D Lazy bones!!! Dukie you are the silliest person I "know".  ;)

Give a call to Russ Collins. He only does injectors now. They might be able to help you with your size selection.

Easiest way to do a turbo on a cav would be to remote mount it. Still keep the stock manifold and yet a turbo as well.

But Fuzzy is right... Stainless would be best. As well as his other suggestions. RC can help you with those as well.

Biggest thing is oil routing. If your turbo isn't oiled well.... poof.

Also look into copper head gaskets. And if you are going for a LOT of boost... o-ringing the block. Forged pistons and so on.

Be prepared to break a lot of stuff. Might not happen.... but be prepared.

The turbo is not big enough for the motor and it's come off the TDI you say... Diesel turbo's dont work that well one petrol engines ... Get yourself a garret and be done with it.... You should be able to run up to 6 psi before engine mods and the ECU should be able to handle that too, although you will need to upgrade the fuel delivery system. ie: bigger pump and a rising rate fuel reg.

Try this turbo calc.

http://www.turbofast.com.au/TFmatch.html

Its not a good idea to just use what you got unless its the right size ;D

Using a turbo off a 1.6L on a 2+L will run out of puff and that sucks to find out after all the work that goes into it.

if you do use it see if you can get a light weight impeller for it. the stockers are REAL heavy.  an aftermarket ceramic impeller would be just the ticket over the stock steel or iron one.
