« on: March 19, 2009, 02:49:16 PM »
Hi I'm new to the forum. Pardon my greenness.

Before removing the engine, do I have to remove the oil pan?

TIA

Welcome to the forum. I don't know if you have to but I'm pretty sure it makes the job a lot easier. Same with the breather cover on top of the motor.

I'm by no means an expert having only done this once with mine but I tried to wrestle the engine out of mine out with the pan on and the breather off for a good 30 minutes before I decided to remove the pan. Engine was out less than 5 minutes after the pan was off.

YMMV.

Mark.

No.

Remove the top (small) cover, and I think the oil filter. It's been a while since I did this, so you might get it out with the filter on, but I don't think so.

Tilt it forward, and with a gloved hand lift carefully by the kick-start handle and the opposite side exhaust studs, when the rear mounts are clear turn it and it will come out the kick-start side.

Make sure you have something to put it in/on, it is not stable sitting on the sump.

Andre' ... no chance of getting that out without removing the oil filter at tyhe front and breather at the top (trust me I've struggled thru this a few times myself)

It's possible... but man what a battle.
Best to remove the oil pan (and of course the breather top cap and oil filter) then pull the oil pickup funnel thing off. This makes it semi-easy to get out or in.
With practice doing it with the oil pan on is fairly easy but the engine has to be tilted and angled just exactly right. I've taken one out (oil pan on) in the morning, and been completely incapable of getting it back in that afternoon without taking the oil pan off. The pictures in the manual are pretty useless except to show what side it might come out..
