Oil tank is overflowing.
« on: March 29, 2009, 01:43:19 PM »
Was synchronizing carbs and had engine warm and idling.  80 psi cold oil pressure, 40 psi when warmed.  recent oil change. 3.5 quarts puts 4" of oil in a 7" tank.  Once bike warmed, oil tank began to overflow.  oil pressure did not decrease.  shut engine down, oil tank is full and about 1/2 quart on the ground coming from tank fill.  what's going on?

It's a chopper, not much stock (and stock is hard to id cuz no case number) think it is a 1975 k5?.  Oil tank is Amen, SS oil lines.

Did you drain the oil from the sump as well as the tank before adding the new oil?

Yes sump and tank were drained bone dry.  kicked engine over a coupla times too, but did not remove filter and whatever oil was in there.  just checked 1/2 hour after shutting down.  oil tank is still full.

The oil filter housing, plus the main oil gallery and passageways, hold at least half a quart of oil.

Has it stopped puking oil now?  If so I'd say you were just over-full.
