1976 CB550 cush drive, is it stuck in the hub or fastened?
« on: April 01, 2009, 06:09:16 AM »
I need help. I am restoring my old CB550, I am trying to take the cush drive out. It doesn't fall out, I can't beat it out from the back side. There is a ring on the chain side with four holes in it for a spanner wrench, each hole was prick-punched. It turns slightly with alot of effort, is this a retainer nut? Should the cush drive just fall out of the hub? Is the aluminum part just stuck to the rubber? What am I missing?

You'll need to remove the retaining ring (WHICH IS LEFT HAND THREAD) before removing the cush rubbers. If the rubber cush actually needs replacing, change the bearings automatically.  Make a tool to fit all four holes on the retainer for removal, it'll leave less damage ultimately.

Run a drill into the center punched spot slightly first, as this damages the thread and is meant to lock the retainer.
