Victim of poor gas?
« on: April 08, 2009, 09:14:52 PM »
My '74 550k Runs poor. How's that for vague? Starts a bit hard, when warm it immediately does not want to idle, and shortly thereafter will not run unless my hand stays on the throttle. Further, when accelerating under load it needs a lot of throttle just to pick up. I had checked last fall, but will again, some of the basics. A compression test has yet to be done as too a carb sync. I know plug reading is key and when I can get to where it's parked I'll pull 'em again. Also, I have a hard time determining what choke position it dislikes the least as it requires a bit of fiddling.

I should mention that I dropped the float bowls and they were all fairly clean EXCEPT there was a strange gelatinous substance at the bottom of each. The tank had been treated with a sealer by the PO and wondered if there's a relationship. I have drained the tank, will blast the carbs with cleaner, and will check the petcock, etc...

It has 10k on the clock, pods, and four into one. I don't have the carb tuning specs just now but it ran well before this situation. It also has two parallel in line fuel filters. I know, I know. As soon as I'm confident about the factory screen they are gone.

I just thought it couldn't hurt to put it out for other opinions and maybe trigger that little pea brain of mine into action.

Thanks for being gentle.  ;D

Think you diagnosed your own problem dude!
If the carbs are full of crud, guess what those 4 wee in-line filters are full of ? ;D
She's sucking on the choke cos she ain't getting enough from the lines is my guess.
There'll be plenty of this happening as the sleeping 4's awaken for the good riding weather. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!
