I acquired a vintage Fiberglass gas tank that was only raw fiberglass on the inside. Research dictates that raw fiberglass will get eaten up by today's gas with high alcohol content.
In an effort to give my local bike shop some business, I let them seal my tank ($100); I've sealed a tank before, but it was a pain. The bike shop outsourced the job to a radiator shop they do business with. I don't know what brand of sealer it was, but the bike shop owner says it some kind of aircraft sealer, and I can see that it's a transparent red color when cured. I'm guessing it Hirsch, but I'm not sure since I've never used the Bill Hirsch sealer.
I filled the tank with gas, and took it for a ride. About an hour later, I noticed gas seeping from the front seam of the tank. Turns out the fiberglass was chipped in that area at some point (before/after purchase? before/after sealing? I'm not sure, but I never really noticed it.) So back to the bike shop it went, and they sent it back to the radiator shop which confirmed the damage. They said they could repair the tank ($85), so I let them. WEEKS later, I got the tank back.
Filled tank with gas again, and sadly, it was still leaking (slower leak this time.) F**k it...I'll just take care of it myself. I'd like to get my hands on the sealer they used so I can let it pool up in the area it's seeping from, but that could take weeks to get the sealer. I have some POR-15 I can use, but I don't know if it will react negatively with the sealer that's already in there. I don't think I can strip the red sealer out without damaging the fiberglass.
Anyone have any ideas?
