Before I put in my order I'd like to make sure that I've chosen the right valve spring compressor and lapping compound. Here's what I've picked out:

https://www.partshighway.com/product.php?productid=99783

https://www.partshighway.com/product.php?productid=99788

https://www.partshighway.com/product.php?productid=99785

I tried to get this stuff at both my local Pep Boys and Autobone, none of which could be found. I was also asked by an employee "valve lapping? wut dus dat do? sumtin for tires?"

Anyway, if anyone has a recommendation for a better place to order from, I'm all ears. I chose this place because it had very high reviews on Google Shopping.

Thanks!
Adam

That valve spring compressor is too big to use on the CB350F.

Check out the other thread on spring compressors.

Looks good Oak. The only thing I would do different is to borrow the compresser from the local Autozone once to remove and once to put back, but I am cheap and drive by it every day. Make sure you clean all the compound out real good before reassembly. I assume you will clean all the carbon from the valves before lapping. Dan

if you are going for the sportingforless one I have an identical one and it is perfect for the job, I have also bought the shock absorber spring compressor from them which is good too.

Dont just put the compressor on and wind the bolt! Lay head gasket face down on thick cardboard , find a standard socket that fits the top collar and hold it on then tap the other end of the socket with a hammer. This will loosen the grip of the top collar on the tapered collets.

WARNING

Dont hit too hard or you may "jolt" the collets out and watch them fly accross the workshop to another planet

After searching every parts store for miles around, I just made a valve spring compressor - bic C clamp and a piece of thin wall steel tubing (it was a mop handle in it's former life).  I cut a window out of the tube so I could get to the keepers with needle nose pliers, and it works great - total cost $4.00.

Rod Gibson showed how to make a valve spring compressor out of an old G-Clamp in Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics a few months back.

...and don't hit it hard enough to move valves down onto worktop as you can bend them.
If you've never lapped valves before be very careful, the face hardening is pretty thick on early ones  but it is possible to cup faces.
Personally I haven't lapped valves for at least 15 yrs, if seats are nasty they need cleaning up properly, if things are OK and not leaking, leave them alone

I didn't use a valve spring compressor on mine...
Its a two man job, but I used the closed end of a wrench to push down the valve spring, while a neighbor used a magnet on a stick to pull out the retainers.  much easier this way.
