Clip-ons
« on: October 26, 2005, 06:45:39 AM »
I'm in the market for some clip-on handlebars for my 1978 CB750F cafe racer project.  I've found the ones at oldbikebarn.com and am wondering if anyone has had any experience with these.

I need the bars to be offset from the clamps (not coming straight out of them.)  I can't tell from the picture of OBB's do this or not.

Do any of you know of another source for clip-ons in about the same price range (<$100)?

The clip-ons made by Telefix should keep you happy - they're adjustable for height, rake and fore and aft adjustment, and should cost far less than $100.

Do a search on Telefix - that should come up with the goods (oh, and they're very substantiial too -adjusted with a big Allen key (wrench).

Partsnmore has some that look just like the ones from bike barn I think. $45 and free shipping.

https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=cb750_sohc&category=controls

Also this place has them for $46 with free shipping.

https://www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-chassis.php?category_id=1.4

Neither on has all the features of the telefix clipons but the only price I have ever seen on those was $149.

Find out what size your forks are and then look for used clip-ons from other makes or models of the same size like VFR or what have you.

The problem with that Unky Ernie, is that all the CB750 forks were 35mm dia, and modern bikes are much larger dia. Even those with conventional forks, as opposed to modern "Upside Down" forks that can be upwards of 50mm. If you can locate a set of modern clip ons you could get some "shims" machined to make up the fit, but they won't look right.

I personally never liked the "clubman" bars, they look like a compromise, and I hate compromises. Raask make a good copy of the brilliant Laverda Jota bars in either black or chrome, and these things look tough, and are multi adjustable. I had a couple of sets and sadly sold them. I wish I had a pair now, they're much more attractive than "Clubman" bars, and you can keep your original headlight brackets and not have any clearance issues like you will with clipons.

Also, once your poor ol' back starts singing a sad song because of the stretch forward (exacerbated of course with no rearset pegs) you can adjust the RAASK bars to a more comfortable position. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ok Terry you got me hooked... Where do you get a set of bars like those? I can't seem to find them anywhere. I have to say that I am sold on the adjustable part (more forgiving).

G'Day Cheapy, I bought mine from a company in Britain called M&P. At that stage (in 1999) they were about $75.00 US a pair, but I've seen them at a couple of US shops for upwards of 200 bucks! BS I reckon, RAASK have got their own website, just google RAASK and you should be able to find it. Cheers, Terry. ;D

There are several older forks that are 35mm (like my GB500). If you check the archives at the GB500 owners group on yahoo, that was discussed not too awfully long ago.  I just put Telefix clip-ons on the GB and have to say I love 'em. Puts me up and back about an inch- perfect.  They are hard to find, though. Believe it or not, one of the sterling members of this group pretty much gave a perfect pair.
Anyhoo, those Raask jobs look pretty similar.  I'd check on ebay some first, though.

ElCheapo,

I was actually just searching for a supplier of these bars, and came across his website (www.rearsets.info) Turns out, his shop (which I never knew about) is literally 1 mile from my house! Anyways, I think I'm going to pick up a pair in the next couple of weeks, and I'll post a review/pics when I get 'em.

Later,
-Pat-

Those bars are the "Laverda Jota" copies I previously mentioned, they're great bars mate, for sure. Omar's is famous for their dirt track stuff, I'd love to build a CB750 based "Street Tracker", which should really be a lot more popular in the US, as it's a US invention, like the "Cafe Racer" is an English thing. The street tracker would be a heck of a lot more comfortable for us old farts too, I reckon? Cheers, Terry. ;D

The guys are giving you good info but, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that several from
this site have had trouble with the old bike barn. they did refer you to other places though.
Anyway, I'd try some of the places recommended and you should come out okay. Later on, Bill ;)

I believe Wild Hair (or was it Hare) Accessories is now repping Telefix.  Also, HeliBars are adjustable and well made. They adjust up and down as I recall. For general comfort, though, I have to say street tracker bars are lower than stock but more comfy than clip-ons.
