matching tire treads
« on: October 26, 2005, 12:58:43 PM »
Is it necessary  to match the tire treads when changing tires.
I already cruised through the tire faqs with no results, also what are some recommendations for a stock 1973 cb750.
Thanks all.

Not sure about the matching treads, but I would be more worried about the difference in age between the two tires.  If one tire is really old but still has good tread, it will be much harder and have much less grip than the new soft, grippy tire.

I think there are opinions on both sides. Using different treads can cause stability issues sometimes. But good rubber is always better than old.

I tend to believe that the tire makers design the front and rear tires of a particular series to compliment each other as far as handling goes. Not to say you couldn't mix and match but I'd think you'd want similar tread patterns and compounds.

Exactly. I wouldn't say the threads should match, but both should be compatible according to the manufacturer specs.

I can speak now from experience. My old GSXR 7/11 matching treads = Wicked canyon carver
My CB750 before tire change - spooky different tread patterns to say the least.

With the new tires = Dreamy. Tracks like a new bike.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the tires are not 10 lbs low anymore? :o ;D

Off to weave a basket.....

Thanks for the input fellers, I've got my eyes on a set of IRC tires that look like they will do the trick. just could decide wether to buy one or a pair.

There's a Tire Gallery in the "Gallery" where you can check out different tread patterns and view opinions/costs etc.
