Is it possible to rebuild the rear shocks?
« on: April 23, 2009, 08:24:45 AM »
Stock CB750 k6 shocks, I think.

Is it possible to rebuild them like you rebuild the front?  They have no damping anymore so I need to rebuild or buy new.

If it's not possible to rebuild, can anyone recommend some new shocks that don't cost a fortune?

I ride single, mostly, but double on occasion.  No long road trips for me, yet.

Thanx!
G

You can disassemble them down to the cylinders but the cylinders themselves are not rebuildable.  I've used MDI dual-rate shocks in the past and they were certainly better than the 30+ year old stockers, but they are a "budget" shock that's for sure.  Got some of their shorty shocks now but cannot comment on their performance yet.

I switched out springs from a stock set for some stiffer ones with no issues.

The shocks that are on it now are completely shot.  Any bump will result in the shocks bottoming out with only 1 person.

We wanna go riding this weekend so we're gonna rip some good shocks off a complete parts bike I got and use those.

Gods bless the parts bikes!!!!!! ;D

I think bottoming is likely more a function of the spring being sacked. My understanding is on a stock shock there is little oil dampening occurring on compression. THe spring is it.

THe oil dampening occurs mainly on rebound. If that is shot what you will get is pogoing, The spring rebounds without control.  With the shock off, and the spring off, give it the push pull test. Likely not much resistance on compression, but should be good firm resistance when you pull out, listen for the oil flow, smooth or not.  If the pull test is good, you may just need springs.

THis is not true on higher level shocks which do have oil dampening in both directions.

Why would you want to rebuild the original pogo sticks?

Yeah, stockers are crap.

Go get a set of Konis.  Well, I guess they are now called Ikons.  They are worth more than they cost.

Why would you want to rebuild the original pogo sticks?
