Before I beheded my 550's top end I was checking for spark, and before I could get the boot off the plug I got a shock. I checked my plug wires and found a couple small cracks. Plug wires on older 550's aren't replaceable (without a lot of surgery), so I as wondering...

What is the best candidate for replacement coils? I know they need to be 5 ohm & 12 volt. I'm guessing early 80's 750's would be good, but I wanted to check and make sure there's no resistors to remove or anything like that.

Grind away some of the Bakelite and you can get those wires out. There's a picture sequence of it somewhere... I was going to make one for the FAQs but I have Dyna coils so I've been lazy about it.

Yeah, I saw dyna made them. I'm more interested in the ease of plug wire changes than performance upgrade. And even some of the performance minded guys were recommending GL1000 coils instead of the dyna ones as a cheap alternative, although I think some of those were 9v/ 3-ish something ohm's which wouldn't work on the 550.

Anyone know for sure that early 80's 750 coils are 12v/5ohm? No resistor? They're on eBay for 20$ all day long, which is in my budget.

I am running coils from an early 80s VF750 on my K0 750. They are 3 ohm.

Well just got a response to some eBay units I was watching... '80 750C units are 3 ohm.

Were any of the 750 coils 5 ohm?

Thanks for the above link, sorrry, I thought the original post implied I was looking for replaceable plugs. I have good 550 coils if I want to do the epoxy method, I was eyeballing 750 coils because I thought they had replaceable plugs, but it looks like the ones with replaceable wires are 3 ohm. Thanks though.
