Charlottesville, VA ??? Pros/Cons
« on: May 01, 2009, 10:10:23 AM »
Looking at possibly relocating for work, basically the same job and same pay.  I've driven through the area, but never really spent any extended time there.

I'd be going from a city of 4 million to 40,000.  Some places I've looked at living would have me commuting on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I think I could handle that.  Experiencing four seasons instead of "hot" and "warm" would be nice too.

Downsides would be leaving some family behind and my wife leaving behind a pretty nice part time job.  I'm not sure what the local economy is like up there, but things are still strong where I'm at.

What's it really like to live there, day in day out? Schools, taxes, what does a gallon of milk cost, that kind of thing.  We have two young kids - are there many young families or mostly college kids in town?

Thanks.

Beautiful area.  Green in summer, great color in the fall.  Great riding.

Yeah, no offence to Houston but I couldn't imagine anywhere being worse than that hot, back-bayou they call Houston. That place is ungodly hot and humid.  :(

Two words: Air Conditioning.  We run from our A/C'd houses to our A/C'd cars to our A/C'd work and repeat from June-September.  It seems like every spring we have a conversation about moving somewhere cooler.  I don't mind working up a good sweat, but not walking 20 feet to my car in the morning.

On the flip side, housing prices are extremely low here.  We all live in mansions by Charlottesville standards.  Salaries are high and work was plentiful -- probably still is by national standards.  Oil, gas and petrochemical industries make for ugly cities with lots of jobs.

I've sold my soul and depend on oil and gas to make a living.  Financially it probably makes sense to stay where I am but it would be a nice change of scenery and probably a "quality of life" upgrade to live in C'ville for a while.  If it's as nice to live there as it seems to visit.

When I relocated from one state to another after 40+ years, I didn't ask "why", I asked "why not"!
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

The Blue Ridge really is blue.
Gets country very quickly--great riding.
Housing prices are quite depressed there--good time to buy.
Lots of traffic on football Saturdays--U Va.
My daughter lives down there in a house about twice the size of mine and she's got land.
Thomas Jeffferson liked it and he was a real scoundrel.
