custom wiring harness
« on: May 03, 2009, 05:28:23 PM »
I'm in the process of building a 71 CB750 cafe and my stock harness has been hacked badly. i have electronic ignition with a red box(don't know the brand). i also have 59 caddy taillights and gsxr controls which makes me wonder if i should have a wiring harness built. the tail lights i want to run as blinkers as well as brake lights. does anyone know of a company that makes a custom harness that would work for my set up. i also herd that i can convert from the stock rectifier( i think that's what it is) to a simpler unit. any help would be great

You can get aftermarket electronic rectifiers, regulators, and combination of both.

I haven't seen anyone offering custom harnesses for your 'unknown to others' build. Don't think that could happen without the bike in front of someone. You'd be better off making your own. Rough basic schematics for such a project are readily available online. I do like the idea of the Caddy tail lights.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

i dont know any company that does them from scratch that are affordable.

There's the crunch. There are places, but they are not cheap. I would just butcher your own harness maybe buy another
stock one. But it doesent sound like you have made too many changes enough to justify the cost
of a custom job in my eyes, Unless you have a mate doing it cheap or for free. I think you can make what you have
already easily work.

I would imagine the GSXR controls have all the same functions as a stock control. Starter - High low beam etc..
So they will wire up just the same. I can't imagine the ignition will be drastically different from others easier.

This should help:

A red-box on the electronic ignition might be a Boyer, although I'm not sure they made them for the SOHC4's.  Does it say anything on the box?  How about on the magnetic pickup plate where the points used to be?

Martek made ignitions for the 750, but I don't recall there being a control box and the pickups were optical (had one on a CB750F with a turbo I bought a while back).  Basic DYNA ignitions also don't have a box, and if they do, they normally say DYNA all over them.

I did my own wiring from scratch on my XS650.  Wasn't so bad.

Check this guy out for regulators/rectifiers.

I just got both from him and plan on installing them sometime this week.
