just purchased a 1972 cb 500 (pics added finished product)

Hey all I'm new to the site. I just purchased a 1972 cb 500 four needs a bit of tlc, i will post some pics later.
So far i have cleaned the carbs,tank, changer the plugs, changed the oil, the bike fires right up but one of the cylinders is not getting spark. coil problem????

nice choice! i have a 73. its in about 300 pieces though :o great bikes. good luck if its coils. they arent cheap. mine are messed up as well.

Nice start curing your own problems Scooter, but don't make a habit of it alright! >:(
We older hands like to give that advice, can't have noobies coming on here sorting their own stuff out without our sage advice, plus we like to have the occasional #$%* fight when we don't agree... you wouldn't want to spoil our fun now would you? ;D

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Thanks, I still have a long way to go.  I took the carbs off and cleaned them...they were not that dirty. Put them back on the bike and the second one in from the left was leaking gas from the over flow, so i had to take them off again.
Reinstalled them the second time after a little more cleaning and all is ok. One question I have the stock air box can it be replaces with individual air filters with out causing any problems carb wise?

The short answer is "NO" sorry, anytime you play with the stock settings either carbs/ari filter/exhaust the bike requires some more fiddling, with pods (single foam air filters) I believe you would need to re-jet the carbs.
You would need to contact some of our CB500 guys.
That leak from your carbs is probably a float hanging up (staying up and not dropping) it's one of the common things we put up with to have the priviledge of saying we own a 30+ year old classic bike. ;D

Well the carbs are back on the bike, ordered a new air filter...put the old one back on for now...looks like a 30 year old KN very dry rotted.  Fired it up with a make shift gas tank it seems to run fine, cant wait to take it for a run .....too cold today -22 with the wind chill .
