« on: May 05, 2009, 05:23:39 PM »
Okay my valves were tapping so i adjusted them to clymer manual specs, .002 for intake and .003in. exhaust i got it all put back together and fired it up only to hear tapping again. Should i readjust them out  or in? perhaps i have an entirely different problem. Oh I'm working with a cb650sc 1982

Are you getting oil up there?  Take the #1 and #4 exhaust tappet covers off, start the engine and note if any oil splashes out of the holes.

Have you adjusted the cam chain tension?  Consult your manual for this one.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

most honda's I work on i set exhaust valves just .001 loose... and some "tapping" is normal..  so on your exhaust i would set them on .004in exhaust..

the real question is how loose were they b4 you started??

well i just adjusted the cam chain tension according to manual before i did the valve adjustment. And before i started the exhaust and intake on 1 and 3 had no movement even at tdc. I didnt measure the others but 4 had movement and its respective valves moved a little too. When i was adjusting them they were covered in oil. I'll try the exhaust at .004 So the more the gap the less tapping?

a little loose on the exhaust valves will make a little more noise but they will last longer.... you have to ask yourself ....

do i want a longer lasting motor or a quite one?

its not going to make THAT much more noise i dont notice it on mine or any honda cars i work on for customers but i do know that honda valves run tite and exhaust valves get HOT and that is a BAD combo...

well im concerned that my vaves are way too loud already. It is probably the loudest thing on my bike. But i dont mind loud valves if it isnt bad for the bike.

I would re-check the valve adjustments, re-set  cam chain tension, exhaust gasket seating.

+1

If unsure why, look up hondamans recommendations for the '77/78 cb750/all years of the SOHC cb650......
I have done this on all the 650's I have worked on/owned/fixed for others.
