I know, it's a bit overwhelming (I was there- refused to remove the carbs for a year).

Look at it this way, you've done it once, you can do it again.  And it'll be easier the second time around.
But if you don't start at the beginning, you'll just be chasing your tail.

Go and do a search for shimming the points plate (might be in the faq).  That'll make life easier when timing.

The advancer mechanism is the shaft that the points ride on, the weights are on the back side of the plate that you can't see.

the carbtune is attached by removing the brass screws on the carbs.  Check out the manual, it'll save you a lot of grief.  Though doing a carb sync is kind of pointless unless everything else is running well.

Here is a pic of 2 of the 4 vac. ports on my 750.  Probably about the same on yours.  Remember, sync is the very last thing you do.  After points, plugs, valves, timing, etc.  Then do sync last.  And not to scare you, but read up on it or you could take a nice running bike and make it worse.  Best of luck and remember, this is fun!!! ;D

Sounds like you never read the manual & familiarized yourself with the process.. BEFORE PICKING UP TOOLS!.. and are now relying on us to explain what you should know before you even start..

You can check advancer by seeing if it snaps back, turning it manually.

If you static timed it according to manual, it should run down the road and work.. & when you put the light on, be reasonably close..

no i did read the manuals except the shop manuals that i have for the 550 all are missing the page that shows how to connect the sync tool.

And as for timing i did read a all the manuals i have and they didnt make clear since to me. Sorry if that is a burden to some people, but thank you very much to the people who are offering help. Trust me i have tried to do this without help.

Did mine with some moly lube I had leftover but points cam grease (which I couldn't find). Any type will do in moderation is what I've read.

would it be ok to put it back on tonight and lube it sunday? i found threads answering that question about lube to use.

Back to advance timing though, if this didnt fix the problem and i still cant get it to advance what should i do? I read a thread that said its better to have the bike fire at the right advance timing than it is the idling time. What do you guys think about this?

Oy. That I don't know. I would think for the purposes of tuning it there wouldn't be a problem but let some of the guys who know for sure answer that.

some of these manuals instructions are so damn vague. When setting the gap for the points are you supposed to eyeball it or is there a indicator that tells you when the gap of the points is at its widest

My manual says by eye. Rotate through until you can tell where the points are fully open then hit it with the feeler gauge and adjust the points to that.

ok set the points gap and all cylinders are at the f mark at 1000k, but i still cant quite make it to the advance marks on any of the points. Is this mean i need new points and what not, or is there another problem. I dont mind buying them. I am gonna get the hondaman set up when i do though.

on a happy note though my bike sounds so much better at idle, no knocking

Ummm....what manual are you using?  The Honda manuals make everything pretty clear, I always use mine then go here for the "updated" service tricks :D

When all else fails, get in touch with Mark (Hondaman).  He really knows his #$%* about these SOHCs.

Andy...you been doing so much tinkering and it sounds like you are pretty close now.  Don't get to picky with the idle thing.  Take it out and ride it.  See how is runs and this might be as good as it gets.  You have to give these bikes a little slack.  Ride it and let us know how she runs...

Don't worry about adjusting the advance, you just need to verify that it is working.  And there are manuals available here for download for your specific model.  I think they're stickied at the top of this very sub-forum, actually ;)
