iwas just flipping through the Directv channel guide when i spotted a program on Discovery Health called I Didnt Know I Was Pregnant. I didnt watch it but i just HAVE TO know just how a woman wouldnt know there was a baby inside her? Obviously i'm not a woman and i dont know what it feels like but i just cannot believe that being pregnant isnt a pretty unique feeling, or IS it possible to mistake pregnancy for a 9 month long bout of indigestion? Ladies, any insights?

A friend of mine, 300+ pounds didn't know she was pregnant until month 8! So it does happen. You couldn't tell she was pregnant.

About 20 years ago in the '80s I had a colleague with learning difficulties. This lady already had 4 kids when she failed to realise she was pregnant with her 5th!! She only found out after a visit to her family doctor for "excessive tiredness".
The standing joke at work after that was that she'd said "Doctor, Doctor it's tiredness isn't it, it's tiredness?"

Well, when a woman is morbidly obese an extra 20 or 30 pounds doesn't exactly raise any red flags. Add to that the fact that being so overweight already wreaks havoc on a woman's body and her normal cycle and I'm not really all that surprised that this happens as often as it does.

One of my closest friends came back from thanksgiving break sophomore year of college and got our little group together to tell us that he was a dad. We all asked "when is she due?". He then told us that he got a call at 2 am from her dad that they were at the hospital (went in thinking it was her appendix about to rupture) and that she was having trouble in delivery. Oh, they had no idea she was pregnant. She had gone on the pill 10 months before this, was a smoker, drank like any sophomore would, and partied like our group tended to do. Never had anything out of the ordinary and we were all kinda scared about what that would mean for the little girl.

She's almost a teenager now, healthy as can be, and smart as her parents (that is saying something). No one has been able to offer a good explanation as to why she didn't get some of the more obvious signs and we can guess at why the more subtle signs may have been missed.

It does happen but it's hard to believe it can...

As far as I can tell from asking girls that didn't know they were pregnant, 2 stand out the most. 1 super duper fat chick and one very very very skinny chick with a drinking problem.
The fat girl didn't find out until she went into labor. The doctor explained that since she was obese, the bodys need or cravings were inhibited because she already had alot stored up. She always ate alot, and weird stuff to boot. She went to the doctor because she was having "abdominal cramps due to constipation" or something.
We were all surprised that anyone had actually had sex with her.
The skinny girl drank alot, and we suspected that she smoked meth. She put on 6 lbs during the entire pregnancy, and was on depoprovera (the shot) she went to the doctor because she had urine that accompanied blood. LOTS of it.
The baby weighed something like 5 lbs took it away from her and sent her to rehab.
As far as I knew, the baby was pretty healthy aside being underweight.
Girl didnt even get stretch marks.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my friend only gained about 10 lbs over the entire 9 months and wasn't a drunk, but did drink like anyone else in her age group would.

ink, that's a really good bit of insight. as you and others said the really over weight (super duper fat

) could easily not realize it. the docs statement about cravings is fascinating.

man i feel so bad for the baby of the other. had a girlfriend (like about a 100 yrs. ago) whose sister was a nurse in an inner city pediatrics ward. the stuff she saw would be more than i could handle. my next girlfriend was a nurse and i often expressed my respect for her. glad i'm over with that nut job.

on the subject of mondo weight; a male nurse friend said a really, really big woman came in complaining of a burning pain in her abdomen. after an extensive series of tests they found under a fold of fat a squished twinkie. her boyfriend and she had a sex game, that involved hide the twinkie, where she (or he can't remember) would hide it. if the other found it it was some sort of prize. apparently they forgot about it in the sweaty heat of passion.

My friends and I call those kinds of guys, "Chubby Chasers." If they pretend to like skinny chicks but sneak off with the big girls, they're closet chubby chasers

My grandmother was a navy wife. She had 4 children, she only gained the weight of the baby with each pregnancy. 3 of them were 8 lbs one was almost 9!

She said if you gained more than 2 lbs a trimester, they put you on a diet.

agreed!

the way many doctors treat them supports the image of arrogance they've (the docs) cultivated for them selves.

tough jobs all the way around.

my grandma was a nurse in training in the 30's. she was in the home stretch of it and had a whoops (my uncle). in the day, nursing was seen as a 'calling' so pregnancy (not to mention the status of women) nixed her career. what a waste. i still have her text books.

The question that springs to mind is; why?
Is it a low level of self esteem? Denial? Self harm?

There's a thread posted recently on this forum (by ecosse, Ithink) showing pics of a wedding somewhere. The main characters were a hideously fat bride and a ghastly skinny toothless groom.

as a ardent admirer of the female form (in it's many forms) i'm with ya on that. imagination, a glimpse of the concealed, and the unwrapping of gifts are reason enough to get out of bed in the morning. or stay in.
