From This, To This...
« on: May 11, 2009, 06:57:05 PM »
Here is my little project I've been working on since Nov. 08'.

just got through making the tag/brake light bracket tonight. This was a freebie i picked up. I'm at the stage of mounting headlight, then wire and fire.

did you just slide the chrome part of the rear fender forward and mount it? i have been thinking of doing that but wanted to see it done first.

Yes, i just moved the fender backwards and redrilled mounting holes which is held on by the turn signals.

Thanks for the compliments. I never posted a build thread because it looked like most people on here liked the stock rebuilds.

It has been a build in progress since Nov.

Thanks again.

Yeah, here is profile shot.
I kinda don't like the shots from the side. I wish i could have raked the front alittle to make the front set more level with the back. I guess I'm my own worse critic.

what are the details on the frame mod? Did you just cut out the middle brace and reweld new pieces at a lower angle or was it more detailed than that?

I hate bobbers.......but yours is a definite improvement on what you inherited mate, she looks lovely and has style....way to go.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I like it. Not my cup of tea so to speak but I know a good build when I see one.

Also good to see that your donor bike was a bit of a basket case. Not a total write off but not very flash.

When the guys on www.hondachopper lower their frame rails like that they recommend gussets where the seat rails meet the frame rails that lead up to the shocks, otherwise you get cracks in the frame tubes due to torque from the shock action.  So, keep an eye on that area.

Here is some of the build pics.

The oil tank had alot more prep after that pic was taken.

I actually thought about gussets and was intending on putting some on. However, i kinda forgot about them  ???. My cuz who works in a metal fab shop said it should be ok. We'll see... If not, guess ill just have to redo it later down the road. Oh well..

The bike was given to me free by a guy who thought the engine was locked up. The bike had been sitting for 20+ years. After i got it home i tried the kick start and nothing... After i rolled it off the trailer i kit the kick again. It turned over  :-\. So i knew it wasn't locked up. After i opened the motor up i found 4 dirtdobber nest in each cylinder. The inside of the motor was clean like off show room floor. Now it turns over smooth. Just waiting on starting it for the first time. Cross your fingers!!!!!

My last big project besides wiring with a santee box is figuring out how to mount my head light. I have a light off of a Harley. The holes already in the bottom triple tree is for the brake lines. So...I don't know if i can drill other holes in the triple tree or not. The headlight mounts on the bottom with a nut type of thing that a bolt goes into. Any ideas?

Sorry for such a long post.

That is very interesting... :o :o :o

reason for that,is that I'm thinking about doing the same cut as you did, less deep,to give me some room for some seat springs...
now what I was concerned about was the following...let's grab your picture... ;D

What I was thinking is that on point "A" there is a force going up...,on point "B" there is a force that pushes on joint "D" and I was wondering if that pipe "C" wouldn't bend like I made line "C".....

Am I making sense..???   ::) ::)

That's what kinda made me stop to cut it,I DO have a hardtail and could weld the pivot point of the swing arm up solid to help in the structure.....

What's the thought about that...???

Love your bike,looks awesome..... :o :o :o

Well, all makes good since. Sooooo, i guess all there is left to do is wait for time to tell. But hey lets be positive, everything is going to do just fine... :o Ha. My luck it breaks on the first ride. But that will be a hell of alot of weld to just break.

I think you'll get some warning signs before it gives way, the guys on the Hondachopper board have described the shock mount tubes bending forwards over time, or developing hairline cracks at the stress points.  Few broken welds from stress/vibration too, but I have yet to read of a sudden catastrophic failure, BUT it's possible that people who experience that sort of failure don't survive to tell about it  :o

As I said, just keep a close eye on things, and start thinking about how you'll fix it if you have a problem.  You might decide to go back and do it next winter or something BEFORE you have cracks or bends, just a thought.

Do check out the board at www.hondachopper.com as they have tons of experience with this sort of mod, which they refer to as "konging the frame".
