homemade baffles/exhaust tip

does anyone have any good links to an explanation about how to fabricate your own baffles/exhaust tip? don't have a problem with using something tried and true, but it sounds like a fun thing to attempt. steve carpenter claims to make his own which "sound just like a yoshi."

I've got one of Carpy's exhausts ('77 CB750F2 - stock 4-1 headers w/ Carpy tip) & it does sound pretty nice.  It looks as though he took a tip from the auto parts store & welded a baffle inside.  The baffle isn't much though, it's sort of like a tube with holes in it.  Glass packing is apparently between the tube w/ holes & the chrome outside - absolutely nothing in the center.

I have to say that although the sound is great, it's really really loud.... As in LOUD.  Also, tuning the thing has been a #$%* since I made the switch.  That probably has to do with a million things on the bike going wrong all together to culminate in my current debacle, but I'm sure such a drastic change in back pressure isn't helping things (except my mid & top end speeds).

I'd say go ahead & do it if you've got another mode of transport & some time to mess around with it.  You should keep your old exhaust stock just in case.

Good luck,

do you already have a megaphone or rusted-out muffler to work with? (i assume we're talking 4-into-1 here).

i've tried a bunch of different things in my megaphone, including nothing.  :)    it's fun, alright.

i'm thinking about adding a cable-actuated butterfly valve or similar, for on-demand hooliganism.

that's a brilliant idea! especially when it's 1 am and time to "turn off" the hooliganism so the neighbors don't hate you. doesn't sound great for on demand performance, though.

my 550/4 that i want to make a tip for has nothing but a header on it right now. came that way. sounds cool, but watch out neighbors. i'd rather something loud, but not too annoying. amybe i'll try making a glasspack like he does. i read somewhere about the different types of muffling, and how this is the least restrictive type ("restrictive" silencers, surprisingly, being the most restrictive ;D). is the glass packing just plain fiberglass? is there a specific type you must use?

My 500 came with just the 4 downtubes and they had VW Bug exhaust tips mounted to them. I just recently got another motor for the other 500 and it came with the same exhaust, must have been done quite often back then.

I had a go at making a silencer/muffler a while back and yes it was fun.
Experimented with a valve in the pipe too and found it had been done before.

Got the details of it under 'Home made silencer' on my site on link below.

Just noticed some of the links on the page are dead.
