2cd gear problems on K2 motor
« on: May 14, 2009, 03:02:05 PM »
My bike started ths today.  Put around 85 miles on it this morning at roughly 65-70 miles an hour so motor was good and warm.  Rolled to a 4 way stop, down into first, 4200 shift to 2cd, and at about 3800 it jumps to false nuetral before 3rd.  i grab the clutch and bump into third thinking okay thats a new one.  3 miles later, another stop, does it again at 3200 or so and hangs up between 2cd and 3rd, had to come to a complete stop to get back into first gear.  The last 15 miles or so home proved to be a pain.  Usually this happens with fifth gear, first time with 2cd.  Does not matter if gently rolling or really getting into it...anywhere between 3 aqnd 4000 it lets go.  What do I expect to find when get it apart.......what do I look for?  Thanks in advance.

Well I don't know you or the bike...meaning I've not followed your posts or history or whatever....

(not personal but with over 6700 members...well you can't read everything).

The jumping out of gear is fairly common with worn shift forks and gears.

However it takes a fair bit of miles to wear them out.

Whats the history of the machine?

As a side note....shifting issues are sometimes cured by a change in oil.

What type of oil is in the bike and how long since it was changed?

sorry.........the motor has roughly 30k miles on it.........if speedo on donor bike was correct.   I've put maybe 10k on it since I got it 3 years ago.  i am running havolene 20w-50 in it..always have...only about 700 miles on this current change. I will say the miles I put on it are moderately severe.........no drag racing or hole shots, but hard riding.   Now it has not got fifth gear at all.  Looks like a tear down.

Sorry, what bike is it again?  With the transmission cover removed, compare the innards to pictures in a manual, something is amiss and it may simply present itself in a visual inspection.
Large, clear pictures will help too. We all like pictures.
