Close encounter with a ditch

I finally got my 550 running nice this past week.

Anyway I was riding from down along the detroit river (bout a 120 mile ride) and headed home. I was going about 55 when an Expedition pulls out of a drive way...right in front of me. A car was coming head on so I could not go around that way and my only choice was to go into a ditch when I could not stop in time. I didn't get hurt, but the bike has a few scratches, and the points cover is trashed. The A$$hole just drove away real fast after i went off the road.

Ever notice when someone pulls out in front of a car and doesn't realize it's there, they freeze and just stop in the middle of the road? It's worse than pulling out and getting moving, but I see it happen all the time.

Anyone got a points cover for a 550 they will part with?

After I got up and checked the bike over, I was just happy I wasn't hurt at all. The rest of the ride went all right, but now the bike seems to have a loss of power over 5500 rpms. This was happening before, but I removed the petcock and put some new seals in and it stopped. I have no Idea what could be causing it now. when I give it half - 3/4 throttle it seems fine, but wide open it hesitates and struggles to reach red line over 5500.

any ideas? I'm thinking maybe some crap got knocked loose in the tank and is clogging the petcock again.

Could be that or your points took a hit in the prang....oh yeah and it's compulsory for you to put up photos after an off......makes us all feel a lot better for it not being us. :D
Sorry about the bike bro but hey you're all right and bike is an easy fix, good to see you got it going well enough to do such a ride...........Hush.

Any 500 or 550 pints cover will fit, take it off and check the gaps and timing to see if thats your running problem

So, he failed to yield the right-of-way, ran you into a ditch, and then left?

Me, I'd call that "fleeing the scene of an accident".

Was it a private driveway?  If so, file a police report.

Yup, if you know any Cops it's even better.  File a report, the driveway he drove out of may have been his own... 

But you're alright, bike's mostly alright, and you both got home together without calling for help.  Have a beer and some rest. 

I thought a 750 points cover would fit too, just that the holes are in different locations in regard to the 'Honda' logo on the cover??? I've seen a few bikes in the gallery with finned points covers that have the fins pointing in a strange direction, I always understood that to be why.

I may go back today and get the address. It was a car full of kids, probably just graduated. One of them had to live at the house.

Glad to hear you're okay, shizzo.   That could've been a lot worse.   A lesson to us all to dress for the slide, not the ride, right?

I do have to agree with some of the other members, that drivers actions constitute nothing less than leaving the scene of an accident caused by their vehicle.   If this this other driver sped off like crazy, it's because he (she) knew that they had just done something wrong and wanted to get the hell outta there.   I say call the law and explain what happened, go back to the address and file a report, take pictures, and take them to court for damages (pain and suffering, you know ;)).  

You said you just got it up and running, was it insured/registered?   If not, at least you know where the a$$hole lives!

Not really interested in selling it, but if someone wants to throw up 1600, I'll let it go and get a 750.

Called the police, they said they'll look into it, but without a plate I cannot prove anything.
I know it was a dark color Expedition, black or dark blue. I am going to take a ride by there in a few days at night to see if they live there ::)

Yeah, I'm just glad I put new front pads on and rebuilt the caliper. I was debating on waiting til later in the season, then I decided I better do it now in case something like this was to happen. The car just pulled out, I saw it coming out of the drive, turning left in front of me..It was as if he looked to his left, saw a car so punched it to make it out in front of that car. Then when he looked right, saw me and locked up the brakes, stopping directly in my path with no room for me to go around. I braked as quickly as I could, but I just didn't have enough room. I was trying to get some pics up, but the phone isn't working right, probably from hitting the ground.

Anyway, I will find a new points cover and get on with life. Thanks for listening to me bitc#

We had a parked car hit and run in front of our house. Twice, the first time the police were not able to find the culprit. The second time they went across the street and asked the neighbors. A lady confessed she had hit it the previous day while there at a bible study meeting. The note must have blown away. It may not be too late at least for the parents to get wind of what went on. :o

Just pulled the carbs yet again, re-adjusted the floats, reset the valves, reset the timing, and just got it back together.
As I pulled out of the drive, it started down poring, but I got to go a couple miles. IT NO LONGER LOSES POWER AT HIGHER RPM"S. The floats were a little higher than I thought...about 24.5mm and it was really running like crap.

Got a new points cover, new pegs, thanks to a local salvage yard, and you cannot tell it ever went down ;D
