Frame damage ! Enough to total Bike?
« on: June 01, 2009, 12:53:44 PM »
So in my accident, the highway peg sheared off and scraped the frame. Insurance co's are trying to say the frame is scrap. Is this really the case or can the frame be repaired? This is my 1996 Magna 750 CD which if they can total it, they will probably get away with paying me less than repairing it. The point of damage is at the right upper motor mount that doubles for the highway peg installation point.

these are the pics that I took.....

and these are the ones that they took.....

So what do you all think....Is the frame damaged where it could start a crack and break or could it be repaired maybe by a weld patch or something else? I love the bike and hate to lose it since the deluxe models are hard to find. But if it would be dangerous to try to fix it and have it break on the highway....then I guess I would have to lose it.

I have had two frames straightened in my younger years.  They were in much worse shape than that.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

That may well be where I am at..... got the dealer to quote both with and without the frame damage.....Major difference in amount. Under NO circumstance will I accept a total. Can't even find another Magna Deluxe for sale and probably wouldn't have low milage and want more that insurnance would pay me for damage. If I have to... I will sue to return everything to prior condition. I felt that either the  frame could be patch welded or even just arc welded to fix the scrape on the frame. Other than the pipes and muffler and bikini fairing and saddlebags, the rest is all minor. Really would hate to lose such a sweet running bike. 1 gear @ redline = 55mph, 2nd = 98, never got third to redline....too chicken but I am at 3800 in fifth doing 75mph.  Redline is like 9650  Great bike!!!

I have had two frames straightened in my younger years.  They were in much worse shape than that.

Hard to picture I am sure, I put my 79 Yamaha XS Eleven Special (Vettered out) into the back of my Honda 400F into the back of a car standing still on Sunset Blvd.  We were doing about 65mph. The 400F front fender wrapped around the front fender holding that bike up and squeezed the forks of the Yammi between the top of the back wheel and rear tire.  That held the Yammie up in the air.

Both frames were straigtened and both rode fine, from what I could tell, afterwards.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Right now I am undecided. I started through my insurance co and when they look at it they said total with nada figures for trade-in value.... I hit the ceiling. I thought that i had insured it for replacement value like I did everything else on the policy. When they check with two dealers and were told that the nada book price was out of line they came back with a figure almost twice the original offer which is still much too low. So I may just deal with the other parties insurance co and just make them repair it or promise to sue them in court for that and much much more. Dealership worked up a quote with and with out the frame. $7k with and $3700 without frame replace. I don't believe the frame is bent, just the tube gouged a little. Not sure what I should do.

Take what you can get?  By it back for a few bucks?  Get the frame straightned?  Just a thought.

sand it, paint it and dont worry about it. that doesnt look all that bad to me.
