Oil leak bad, stud pulling out worse...
« on: November 08, 2005, 11:11:20 PM »
So I'm really troubled by this oil leak that seems to have developed rather quickly on my 750f2. I have had the bike about 45 days, and the previous owner is an experienced rebuilder, who rebuilt this top end about 4000 miles ago. The leak seems to be coming from just to the left of the rightmost spark plug (no1?) Could this be the seal for the stud in this location? I have ruled out the head gasket itself, the leak is above this, and the tach cable, the seal looks good there. It looks like it is coming out of the gap just behind the frame and between the exhaust ports.  I'm going to pull the motor out this weekend so I can get a closer look, but when I start the bike, oil is rapidly exiting whatever hole is in there. It began as just a small leak but got progressively worse over about 4 days.
Any ideas? This is my first bike, but I've taken plenty of VW motors apart, so I consider myself capable of replacing seals on air cooled motors.
Thanks

Sounds like it's coming from the under-cam seals, they're a rubber disc roughly 20mm diameter situated under between the cam towers and the head. Sometimes they get displaced (pushed down into the hole) as the cam is tightened down, though the leak doesn't appear immediately for some odd reason, I've always glued them in situ to try to prevent it. They're a cheap item, but very time consuming to get at.

Well, I ended up pulling the head off finally to see what it was, after figuring out the 4 "hidden" bolts, it looks like I had a head gasket leak. Whoever had this apart before really was not nice. The head and cylinders are off to the machine shop tomorrow for a check-up.
