fuel delivery issue cb650
« on: June 12, 2009, 09:25:19 PM »
I recently hit a snag on this rebuild. The motor will not fire, unless i squirt starting fluid into the carbs, so I assume I have a fuel delivery issue.  the carbs have been cleaned, and I have tracked the fuel flow, and it is flowing all the way to the bowls, after that, I have no idea what is going on, just know that once the starting fluid runs out, the engine dies.  Any ideas on what I might be overlooking??

You have a CB650 and you removed and cleaned your carbs. :D
I bet you a chocolate fish that you put all the floats in upside down. ;D
Did it myself and have had others on here tell of finding floats fitted upside down.
If it was just one carb something would work but all 4 at once....it's either fuel delivery from the tank or upside down floats ha ha ha....... ;)

Hush, mate, you're the only bloke I know who would put all the floats in upsidedown. :D

I had a problem like this way early in my build thread and the problem was I accidentally set the float height on all four much too low, so it'd shut off the gas long before it was supposed to, and gas never made it to the plugs.

Someone else on here bought a 650 and it only ran on 3 until he found that #4 had the float in upside down....seriously they look right when they are wrong. :D

...I NEVER had that problem, but then again, I was pretty meticulous about how I took them apart, and they were the first carbs I'd ever dismantled, so to me, they look 'right' when they are 'right'. ;)

ok, so I dismantled the carb AGAIN, and I believe that you all were right.... Floats in upside down, however the jets were clean and I still have nothing, same deal as before.  Any other suggestions?

Can you tell me exactly "how" you can squirt starting fluid into the carbs?
You would only be able to do that with the airbox off unless you are running pod filters.
Also can you see where the choke butterflies are sitting?
Are they open (that is lying flat horizontally) or closed (closing off the carb horn totally).
I'm just wondering if your choke has been set wrong.
The floats in the carbs should look like a pair of little shoes (well on my 79 they do) when fitted correctly, on 80-82 model I believe they are plastic and I am unsure of the shape.
Oh yeah and are your carbs the older mechanical ones or CV ones, CV's have a large chrome top and mechanicals look like the head of a dinosaur. :D

woah. your carbs are WAY different from mine, or something, Hush.
My floats connect to the body of the carb, curved side up (or, if you're holding the carb body upside down so you can see the jets etc, flat side up) but the pivot point et all is all in the carb body instead of in the bowl.  I've got pretty much nothing but overflow tube in my bowls.  Weird.

Oh Kit you Doris, I was trying to show him which way up they went ha ha, my floats also hinge from the top but I was interested to see if his were fitted correctly as I may have convinced him to rehang them wrong and that wont help. :D
Picture is a set of my old floats sitting inside the bowl, I thought it might give him the idea of what they should look like.
