Alfredo Sauce
« on: June 14, 2009, 10:19:54 AM »
I recently picked up this 1972 Suzuki T350. It's a two stroke.

One of the noteworthy things is it has fabulous compression. Anyway I pull the heads to see what I see. The top of the pistons are covered in this substance that looks like Alfredo Sauce. It is oderless and apparently not water based, else the cyclinder walls would be rusting.

I clean up the piston tops and head. Kick it over a few times and I don't see anymore appear. I reassemble heads and put in spark plugs. I kick it over about 10 times. Now I remove the heads again. Again the top of  the piston is saturated with this Alfredo sauce...

Clearly it's in the crankcase and such as the way a 2 stroke works it would pull it up.

I've seen oil and water mixed, but this isn't it... This stuff is a clean, consistent substance. I just can't figure out what it is. Why it's there is a different question. I'm wondering if it might have been put in intentionally as a means to preserve the engine.

Anyone have a clue????

White Lithium Grease?

Used to be a fairly cheap replacement for assembly lube. At least for cars. Never heard of it being used on a smoker though.

Does it feel like grease? Or maybe it's degraded 50:1 mix. Like 20 years degraded.

Sounds to me like it could use a good flushing with some hot 5w30.

Well I found a drain plug for the crank at the bottom of each cyclinder. Shot some kerosene into the side ports with the piston at it's lowest position to clean it out.

2 hours later this old bike is a running.

There wasn't really much in it, but enough to to be pulled up from the crankcase and coat the top of the piston. Still a mystery about what it is and why it's there.

The Suzuki T350 was an interesting find, not because it remarkable in any peticular way, but because of it's rarity. I've seen Suzuki's T250's and T500's for sale now and then. I've never ever seen a T350 for sale. When I got it. I searched every city in the US on CL to see if there were any others. I found one in the entire US in California.

Two years ago I rode a friends restored T500. The vibration coming up from the handlebars was just about unbearable.I expect the T350 to be about the same. Parts for the T250 and T500 are around, but very little to choose from for the T350. Fortunately many parts are the same.

This T350 isn't actually running and ridable. I had just done some basic work and wanted to see if it would bark. So I've replaced the point system, bought a new coil, worked the carbs just enough such that it should run, removed the Alfredo Sauce and I heard it bark for about 15 seconds, then shut it down. I guess I'll get serious with it now.

Was common this side of the pond. mostly same as T250 (also known as the super six) except for barrels/pistons and carbs(maybe only jets --not sure)
