Spinning kickstarter?
« on: November 18, 2005, 07:49:59 AM »
Aloha,

I just got a low mileage, one owner, CB500K0 back on the road after 15 years of being stored.  Sure, did the usual carb cleaning, fluid change, timeing, etc. Start right up, idles smooth and revs to the moon. However, last night was the first time to get it on the road. After a brief warmup ( its been in the low 80'F, here ;D) I snicker into gear and off we go.

Everything sounds and feels good until.... the kickstarter lever whips back and hits me in the leg. Ouch! I noticed that the lever will spin until it hits the footpeg and then whips back. All of this when the clutch engages.

Has to be clutch realted, eh?

Any ideas of what the problem may be?

Small spring on the inboard end of the kickstart shaft if you are unlucky (engine out job) Main kickstart return spring fitted wrong if you are lucky (just clutch cover off) NOTHING to do with the clutch
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

If it's the big fix, chuck the damn thing over the left shoulder.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.
