Leaky carbs
« on: July 03, 2009, 05:26:09 AM »
So I've rebuilt the carbs (twice) now with all new rubber bits and thoroughly cleaned the jets.  The bike runs fine, but after it warms up, fuel leaks out of the #3 bowl like a faucet.  It seems to be leaking from the bowl gasket but it's hard to tell.  Fuel is not coming out the overflow tube, so I'm pretty sure it's not a stuck float.

When I had the carbs apart, I messed around with polishing the float bowl, could this have warped the soft metal?

Or...

After first rebuild attempt, the #3 float was stuck, so had to open it up again to smooth out the pin that holds the float in place.  Is it possible that the rubber O-ring/gasket is a one time shot and should be replaced since I opened it up?  When I opened it up, the O-ring would not go back in right away, it was too big to fit back in the grooves.  I had to wait until the next day for it to shrink back down.

Not looking forward to pulling again, I should be able to pull the bowl with a small enough screwdriver, right?

Yes you can pull bowls off while the rack is on the bike.  First I would check to see if you have a crack in the bowl or a nick in the mating surface.  Try switching the bowl to another carb.  If the problem follows then you have a problem with the bowl if not then the problem is somewhere else.

That is an inconceivably egregious transgression against my rudimentary concordance of socially shunned individuals.
