Need brake help...
« on: July 09, 2009, 04:51:39 PM »
Interest in my previous thread seems to have dissolved so I'm starting a new one. I read somewhere, I forget where, that front calipers from an 80-82 cb750f will bolt right onto a 1978 cb750f as long as I have the mounting bracket. Can anybody confirm or deny this allegation? Will I need to upgrade the master to compensate for the two extra pistons or should the stock one suffice?

So I went ahead and bought the calipers, I looked at several pictures and they look as though they'll bolt up just fine. What I really need to know is if my stock master cylinder will be strong enough to push dual piston calipers or if I'll need to upgrade to a stronger master cylinder. Somebody please help.

I've put these dual puck calipers on both of my '78 750F's. The stock master cylinder will work fine. The mounting brackets needed come from 81-82 750-900 supersport models. Other models have the same calipers, but one of the mounting brackets is not correct(longer, bigger). Both brackets should look identical.

Cool, I'll just rebuild the stock MC then. I compared the pictures in the Ebay listing quite a bit to whatever else I could find. There was no year listed on this specific listing but they looked identical to a pair of 81 750f calipers. Comes with the mounting brackets so it sounds like they should work just. I'm getting anxious to get them and slap them on.

How much of an improvement is there in braking over stock? I haven't driven the bike since I got it so by the time these brakes are on and working I'll be taking my first ride on her, so I have nothing to compare to.

A good working MC, a system free of air, and good brake lines will make the stock system perform quite adequately. Beyond that, the double puck calipers add a touch more stopping ability and a better choice of brake pad compounds. The 81-82 rotors are also bolt-on to the 77-78 F and they have much of the unused disk space cut out, therefore lighter.

Nice, I may have to look for a set of rotors in the near future. I'll probably save that one for the winter tear down. Thanks.

Generally speaking the one time ultimate stopping power is determined by the capacity of the master cylinder. Multiple discs and driven pucks give an advantage everywhere else EXCEPT the ultimate one time stopping power. Like reduced puck wear by spreading the same power over more area, reduced fading (biggest advantage), reduced heating of the fluid (more fluid in more lines)  more symmetry of feel in the fork etc.

The stock one disc, one driven puck system puts it all on the line one time, then fades into oblivion by the third or fourth panic stop, equivalent to a few laps around the track.

I'll add to that what's already been stated: by changing hardware, you may get more access to compounds, rotor material, and the like which will improve the ultimate braking force without changing the master cylinder. But if all one is doing is (not you) converting a stock system to a dullie with stock parts, the master cylinder rules as far as "power" is concerned.

Oh cool, I'm learning something new every day here. Sounds like I'll need to look more into upgraded pads and rotors, any idea where I should start or what would be recommended for high performance semi street use? Sounds like if I want the most performance that I'll need to upgrade the master at some point too, probably do that along with steel lines this winter. What would be a good upgraded master cylinder I could get? Preferably one that maintains a bit of classic styling to it.
