Can I mate 2 different case halves together?
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:04:25 AM »
and get a bunch of baby cases???  ;D :D

Okay, really now... the motor in my bike (78 CB750) has a crack on the bottom that leaks a little (PO already tried to repair). I already bought another case from Ebay. My motor is already apart and split. Can I use the bottom half from the ebay one and mate it to my top half without any issues with bearings or other unforseen issues?
Does it even matter if the motor SN is different that what came with the bike?
In deeper than I should be...

You'll just need to make sure to check the crank bearing measurements (as described in the manual) and probably need to replace some of them.  Other than that you should be fine.

Aint gonna work.. not saying totally impossible, just highly unlikely.

Cracked case, not that hard to fix usually, only 1/2 the work if crack is not at matting surface.

You think the cases may have warped slightly and that a set will have warped together as a unit over the years where a different set will have warped differently?  Just wondering cause that's the only thing I could see that would effect the usability.

Cases are linebored and mesured in probably tenths of a thou, then marked as to size.

If there is even 1/2 thou shift in centreline, between 1 case set and another, it may never fit, ie bearing to tight, or too loose with proper shells.

Might be interesting to check it out if both case sets were stamped identical on the bearing sizes, but they could easily be all to tight, too loose, or maybe even both?

I am sure someone has done it and gotten it to run (by mixing shells), but gonna be a nightmare for future bearing replace ment.

BTW my 69 cases are stamped with batch numbers at rear, around corner from countershaft sprocket.. if this continued on later models, it would def be something to check when buying an engine.

Learn something new every day.  Makes sense but I never would have thought of that.
