Handlebar bolt and new grips??
« on: November 18, 2005, 05:56:04 AM »
I just changed the grips on my 76 F1 and on the clutch side, inside the handlebar there was a 4-5" bolt that was just flopping around in there, it was not attached to anything and does not seem to attach to anything! Any ideas what this was for? and whether it matters if it is attached?
Btw, I do not know if they are original bars, but I think not!
I put on 'foam' grips and they are a lot more comfortable.

There shouldn't be anything IN the handlebars, I'm thinking that some kid was playing around and stuck the bolt in the end of the bar "just because".  Maybe it's a spare bolt for something that the previous owner was carrying around for some reason?
Make sure the bolt didn't do any damage to the wires running through the inside of the bars.

I measured the bolt, it is just over 2.5" so I dont think it is long enough to do any damage? When I look in the handlebar, there is a small bracket in there, I wonder what that is for?

I recently changed the handlebar weights on my Suzuki GZ250. I was being careful, but one of the nuts just fell inside the handlebar. The easy solution would have been to leave it there and get a new one, but they are not common and I didn't want a nut wiggling inside the handlebar. I was thinking about getting a wire and a magnet but I tried first to blow from one end. The nut just pot out by the opposite end. I guess it would have been much more difficult had it been a bolt or screw...

I did wonder if the bracket, just inside the bar end was to screw a weight to, but I was told these bikes didn't have bar weights? and there isn't a similar bracket on the throttle side!
Btw, great tip for sliding new grips on; spray witha good coating of hair spray, it firstly lubes then it gets sticky so acts as an adhesive.

It wouldn't be the remains of a bar-end mirror would it?
