wont go in gear!!!
« on: July 18, 2009, 01:33:59 PM »

CB750K4
so as per the advice of this forum i recently took apart and rebuilt the clutch. this all started with a cracked clutch cover to be replaced. since then i have taken apart the basket, measured to make sure all is within specs, soaked all plates in oil and took extra time to make sure i was putting all pieces back correctly. i did have the clutch plates in the basket one of the ways that did not line up with splines, so i was carefull not to do that again. now after reassembling and adjusting when i put it in gear and release clutch the wheel does not spin. so im not sure what to be looking for or how to trouble shoot. do not want to say it is NOT the clutch but i am fairly confident that after reading all this that i did reassemble correctly

PLEASE HELP MUST RIDE SOON!!!

Is the cable adjusted?   Did you do any other things to it while you had it apart?

Sounds like your clutch is fully activated all the time, sorry but you are going to have to go back in there and sort that.
I doubt very much that you have the clutch cable so tightly adjusted that it is on all the time but to check just slacken the cable at either end (I'd release the bottom as if it's not that you are going to have to remove it anyway to crack the case open again).
Does the 750 have those special extra thick cork separators that have to go back on in a special order?
If so I'd check you order of assembly...best of luck, it wont be a big problem just an annoying one. :)

is there some way to check, like should something be turning or not when in gear or not in gear with the basket out or something else to look at. i have a feeling there is a bigger problem here because i have built that clutch 4 times and feel like i have a pretty good handle on how it all goes together. or maybe it is something very small im missing. as far as being activated all the time i can feel the lifter plate pushing in against pressure from the springs sooo....?

Loosen the 4 bolts holdin springs until you can grab it and move it slightly, pull it toward you(pressure plate)and spin it slowly,if you feel it go in and move slightly towards you ,keep it that way until you tighten bolts enough to keep it there.Good Luck,Bill

Chuck her on the main stand and spin the back wheel by hand, does it spin freely?
OK next toe it into say 2nd gear and again manually turn the back wheel, can you turn the motor over this way?
if you can spin the back wheel by hand and it does not engage the motor then somewhere the clutch is not meshing and your motor and gearbox are disconnected from each other.
This can only be in the clutch area. (unless you are unlucky enough to have snapped a primary chain!) :o
I rebuilt my clutch and left a vital part out (wee pressure plate) and everything looked and felt OK, but there was no connection between the engine and gearbox.
It was the part that fits in behind the clutch adjuster and the pressure arm was just pushing on the end of the plates but not activating them!
(Is part number 17 on page 150 of Clymer in 650 book, proper name is bearing retainer) :D
I stumbled by accident over the part I had left on the bench and after a quick look through my Clymer bible I realised what I had done, and I have been rebuilding bikes for 36 years so I should know better! ;D

Does the 750 have the large "A" friction disc that "must" go on first when assembling?
I'm no 750 expert, just interested in helping. :)

G'Day PG13 and all who have replied. I think that this may be similar to topic 51486.0. Look at the reply by Mystic at the top of page 2. You should find this topic if you search for something like "Clutch won't engage". Pat

GOT IT!!! thank you all so much for the help! after reading all of your responses and pulling it apart again(5th time ???) it all seemed correct and i couldnt see any reason for it. Hush i tried what you said about spinning the wheel in gear and it was all free spin before i pulled it apart. and after i put it back together. not sure what happened but i got pissed and just kept throwing in into gear from 1st and from 2nd. suddenly it just popped and started spinning in 2nd!!! then from 1st!!! soooo.... magic? i dont know but it works. finally a little reward for sticking with it im off to test ride for the first time. we'll see what happens hopefully no surprises, but im realistic there probably will be. but thats half the fun right. thanks again all, im SURE you will be hearing from me again

That bike may have originally been bought in Salem, so magic is good. ;D
