Yep thats what I did got the spring off but when I went to put the new one in stuff went every where . Could be just fatigue but I gave up for today in frustration.  Could not get the spring to center so I could put in the keeper.

Don't worry to much,  that can happen at times, even when you have the correct valve clamp   ;D

I use a Kowa Seiki compressor...it has different adaptors to screw in to compensate for different size retainers. It has never failed me. Me good friend Dana(for Sam) has a Pingel compressor that works with compressed air (he also has a stanh alone tool that works with air just for R&R of retainers). Boyh are the berries. It took him almost 1 year to get his Pingel(years ago) and when I checked about getting one Pingel said forget it. The Kowa tool is great BUT if you don't use it alot it's not worth the price(unless you like to own great tools)!

You don't really need no stinking valve spring compressor. You need a hammer, a proper socket and skill.

I've used this method before reading this article, but it explains it well.

Is this the compressor you got?

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2004242/showCustom-0/p-2004242/N-111+10201+600003570/c-10101

And if so did they send ya the right one? There are two listed but only one should work for your bike.  Item #ZX510065A

The reason I ask is that I bought one from them a few years back and it works great. It was not the exact same one though. JC Whitney changed to the "one handed" design but otherwise they look the same. Just wanted to know if the new design is a turd so I don't make any bad recommendations.

A recently bought a cheap one in a hardware store. It comes with two jaws, one straight and one angled, so you can adjust it to shorter valves. The handles moves like in those jaw grips, so you can quicly adjust the distance and then, with the lever, slowly compress the spring. No problems with it. Send a link of the one you bought.

I've done that many times BUT it doesn't help getting the retainer and keepers back on. ;)

joeb, The one you have looks near identical to the one I got a few years ago with the exception that your ratcheted arm is waaaaaaayy shorter. I can see now why doing your valves has been such a pain.

They had two versions of your type of compressor and one was advertised to "work on motorcycle engines". Possible that you received the "car only" version. If the JC Whitney experience hasn't left too bad a taste then maybe just send yours in exchange for the proper one.

Yep, it looks a little too long.

This is how I removed the valves on my CB350Twin head. Check that there is a spare set of jaws -for shorter reach- attacked with duct tape to the compressor. I didn't even need them.

I have to agree that, for 30 euro, it's not worth the pain to remove the springs or, even worst, to put them back.
