What am I missing to make my headlight fit?
« on: August 07, 2009, 12:33:40 PM »
Ok, so my grandpa had a huge front fairing on my bike and I want to strip it back down to stock.  I am trying to rewire it and put my headlight back where it goes but I can't figure out what I am missing.  Here are some pics...

Here are the 4 parts I have

Here is the fairing it was in

And here is the headlight bucket with the wiring rats nest I am going to have to sort through to find all the wires to hook up

Oh, I know exactly what you are talking about.  I bought a bike with that exact (almost) same fairing on it and the p.o. told me that the headlight just came out of the fairing and went back in the original honda headlight bucket.  That is not the case.  The only thing you can reuse is the actual headlight/bulb.  You will need to find a stock headlight ring assembly with the three screws that attach it to the bucket.  The hardware from the fairing will not work.  I had to look on eBay to find one....found an entire headlight assembly/bulb/bucket for about $25 or so.  As far as I know, they are no longer being produced, so unless you find a NOS one somewhere, you will need to pick up a used one.

Same for the turn signals....don't know if yours came with the originals, but the stock front signals and stems are probably gone and you will need to find those as well.

Good luck.

Yes, I know.  It sucks.  I said the same profane words when i found out.

With all the thousands of these bikes that were made, you're bound to find one pretty easily.  If you go the ebay route, search "honda cb headlight" and you'll get a ton of them.  Also, if eBay and/or the local places don't turn any up, call up Cycle Recycle here in Indianapolis.  They have everything ever made in stockpiles (literally) and can probably ship you one pretty cheap.  That's where I got my turn signals and stalks.  They have a website, but only sell new stuff online...you have to call for the old used stuff.

http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/

Good luck.  Hope you get it together and riding soon.

So the only thing I need is the outside ring?  It seems like the black ring that is used for adjusting aiming doesn't have anything with which to use to adjust...the screws don't hit anything...

Oh crap...they do, don't they!  I wish I had noticed that before.  Would have saved me alot of grief.  $30 for a new one is cheap too.  New is the way to go for that price!....you don't have to hunt for one with a good chrome ring.  That's the first time I've seen a new set.  Good find.

No, you need the whole headlight mount.  The stock outer ring is kind of like the one off the fairing, but it has three "ears" that go inside the headlight bucket....then three screws go thru the bucket and into the ring to hold it in.  The headlight is held in the ring by and inner ring assembly that has an aim adjustment on it and then screws to the outer ring.  In short, it's basically kind of like the one off the fairing....but totally different.  ;D  You need everything from the headlight except for the bucket and the actually glass bulb/light (since you have one already).  If you go to cycle Recycle's website and look under electrical/lighting you will see a pic of what you need.

Those look like turn signal stems sticking out of the bottom of the fairing. You might be able to use those. Use the stems to replace the headlight bucket mounting bolts and you might be able to avoid buying new signals.

Yea, I thought about that, they look like they may fit so Im going to try that before buying new fronts but I definetely need the stems for the rear.

What did your Grampa use for back signals? Course, here in Texas you don't need signals at all. If you have them they have to work, but if they don't work you can just take them off and still pass inspection.

HAHA, yes, Danielle is on YOUR team.  And yes Im the military guy that is randomly at people's houses  ;D  My dad prob was interested in talking about the bike but I have no idea why he wandered off.  Its probably better he did wander off else he would have kept you there for hours...the man LOVES to talk.

As far as my rear turn signals, they are mounted to these extended arms that double as the mounts for the saddle bags.  They actually extend the turn signals to behind the brake light even.  They do work fine though and I'll leave them till I can get the proper mounting equipment to move them back.
