no compression?
« on: November 27, 2005, 12:11:04 PM »
hello everyone, new guy here and i have a few questions for anyone out there.  i recently bought a 76 cb550, as recent as, last wednesday.   theres a few things the bike needed/needs.  one of which is the drive chain adjustment. so here is my story... i kick started the bike, it turned over and warmed up and off i went to checkers to get a 24mm wrench... which they didnt end up having anyhow.  back outside and on the bike, in neutral on level ground...i tried to kickstart it and there was no resistance on the kickstart lever.  even with my hand, i pushed it all the way down.  being a few miles from home and no one in my area with a truck to even think of calling,, i put it in first and push started it and to my house i went with no problems.  once i arrived back home,, i thought, i still need this wrench, so i turned it off, re-kickstarted it, same conditions, level ground, in neutral...and it turned over just fine, fired right up... so off i rode to another store... and another disappointment at pepboys... 21mm was the largest they had so back out to my bike,, level ground and in neutral,,, no resistance again!   another push start,,, and here i am, back at home wondering what happened.

the history of the bike as far as i know, it was run often, once a week or so by the previous owner for two years.  passed emissions this past june and then was parked as the previous owner had bought another honda bike.  it currently has 19xxx miles on it and has ran fine with no problems at all the past week...or i should say, it has kick started fine every time this past week.  any help or comments would be much appreciated and if this has been a reoccuring topic, i do appologize... i searched in the little search box above for a few different titles... thanks again, leeaaron!

thanks jorge, i was looking around the mentioned area of the kickstarter and it is a bit loose,  slides left and right maybe 1/8th to a quarter inch.  im filling the battery back up and re-charging it too... not that that will solve the kickstart problem... but ... you know, one thing after another.. thanks for the heads up!  leeaaron!

...if the kicker goes limp again...try just putting it in gear and rocking it a little, then see if the kicker grabs the gears.  Your problem is not low/no compression, since it runs intermittenly.  Sounds like a gear or something in the kicker is worn or loose.

radigga... yeah, its grabbing for sure.. i know very little about these bikes... any bikes to be honest and am interested in learning.. i failed to mention, due to a lack of any connection.... but  its hard to get in neutral when the bikes on... when i turn if off it goes into neutral easier from second than first... a friend of mine said it could be clutch adjustment... but hes in ohio and works on harleys, so he cant readily look at mine and see what the problem is... waiting on tools now.. thanks for the heads up!  much appreciated! leeaaron...

The kick start shaft has a ratchet between the shaft and the pinion which connects to the transmission. If the spring which presses this ratchet together is broken, it could cause this sort of problem. Unfortunately, on the cb550 it is a job which means splitting the crankcases to get at the parts. Alternatively, there could be one or more teeth broken off a pinion giving a dead (non-connective) spot.
Difficulty getting into neutral with the motor running is almost certainly due to bad clutch cable adjustment.
