Anyone in the Chicago area??
« on: August 08, 2009, 03:53:02 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm having trouble trying to perform my first tune-up and was wondering if anyone on this board was in the Chicago area and would mind helping me out.  I live in the northwest burbs, a town called Bartlett (by St. Charles and Elgin).

What kind of tuneup do you need help with? Valves, points, timing, sync, cam chain tension?

Is your bike stock- what have you changed?

If you wouldn't mind riding out to Aurora this week I might be able to help you.

Hey Jonnyvilla,
My bike is completely stock and I'm just trying to do the cam chain tension and the valve adjustment until I buy a carb sync tool.  I've got the tank off and I fiddled with the valve adjustment but am not sure I am doing it right.  I'd hate to put it back together and ride it over in case I've done something wrong.  Would a half an hour ride do much damage if the valves are slightly off?  If not I can always hassle a buddy to let me borrow his truck.

Even a single rotation of the crankshaft can bugger things up of there's something really out of whack with the valves.

Describe your fiddling to us.  Unless you changed the tappet settings a lot you're probably OK.  How far have you turned them from their starting points?

Bartlett is kinda far for me, hopefully someone closer can pop in, the whole tune-up procedure only takes an hour or two barring problems or parts availability issues.
