Not affiliated with these guys or anything, but I got my Dyna S from these guys and they were quick to ship.  And they have them for $120.  Gonna get some coils and wires from them next.

OK...I just have to ask.... What exactly are you guys getting for $125-150? you are showing pictures of the pick-up/breaker plates but what about the module unit? I bought mine out of Dennis Kirk about 4 yrs. ago for like $375.That plus Accell coil 7 wire set for $150. If you guys are paying only around $120....are you getting the module with it?

The Dyna-S doesn't have an electronic module, it only replaces the points, condensers, and rotor, not the stock mechanical advance.

Well mine has a module.Blue box with built in retard-advance,timing light etc.I wasn't aware of a setup that runs without it.

You've got the Dyna 2000. It is a digital ignition and is a much nicer unit than the Dyna S. It also allows you to choose from 5 different advance curves.

Quick question to all you Dyna users.  I acquired a second CB550, this one having a Dyna S installed from the PO.  From the looks of it, he kept the stock coils though.  Anyhow, I'm a newbie when it comes to EI, never had the pleasure.

So, what kind of maintenance do these guys need?  Points, no more!  That I get, but do I still need to check the timing at regular intervals?

thanks,
Matthew

If you get really bored, you can.  It's not a bad idea to occasionally (maybe once a year) check with a strobe light to make sure the stock advance mechanism is working properly, but the Dyna-S is basically a set once and forget kind of thing.  The stock coils will work fine with that ignition, but you won't get the full benefit unless you upgrade to newer 5ohm coils, or (if your charging system can handle it) 3ohm.

Welcome Matt, and the short answer is...........(drum roll)............... No! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hmmnnn, an interesting quandry. I need a Dyna 2000 for my racer engine, and you wish you had saved some dough by just buying the Dyna S? Now I have an (almost) new Dyna S in a box at home, so maybe we could do a deal? Do you need an oil cooler for your bike, by chance? (maybe not until summer, I guess) Cheers, Terry. ;D

I'm starting to work on my big motor project 900+cc kit, will the stock Dyna S suffice or will I need the 2000???

This motor is going to be cammed, with new valvesprings, Earls oil cooler, attached to what I believe is a Terry's adapter.

Hum, I've been wondering about Dyna S lately so I'll as here: My mechanic boss told me to steer away from DynaS ignitions because many failed regularly after about 3 years. Has anyone had this happen to them? My boss also mentioned that those were older model ignitions and perhaps they've improved by now, but I thought I'd ask.

I've used the exact same Dyna-s module on four different bikes over the last six years and haven't had a problem yet.

If you decide to get one, make sure you get the DS1-1, not the DS1-2.  The 350 and 400 use a smaller magnetic rotor.

It's an old wives tale mate, put about by old timers who like to listen to the "clack clack clack" of contact breakers. Another one for "Myth-Busters", methinks! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I would use the 2000 as you can choose between 5 digital advance curves. I have it on my 915.
