750F running like crap, Ideas?
« on: August 08, 2009, 06:33:10 PM »
Here is the story. I parked the bike because the carbs were leaking from the bowl gaskets and i was busy working on my 550. When i rebuilt the carbs i replaced the gaskets and dropped in a set of 77 needles bumped up a notch to richen it up. Bike fires up,runs and revs fine. When i take it out on the road it does ok at idle and with a little throttle. In the 1/2-3/4 throttle range it losses power and at full throttle it just bogs and sounds bad. When i let of and decelerate it pops and backfires loud. SO i switched back to the stock needles and still have the same issues. I checked my timing and its on. What are your ideas? Does this sound like it could be fouled plugs. All 4 pipes are hot. So basicly it ran fine, i rebuilt the carbs and now it runs like crap.
Where should i start? Pull the carbs and re clean them?

How clean is the tank.  A clogged petcock filter or the petcock itself could cause a restricted fuel flow.  What was causing the leaking before?  Junk from the tank causing the needle valves not to seat properly?  Backfiring or popping on deceleration points to a lean condition.  Could be caused by a low fuel level in the carbs.  After the bike sits a bit the fuel level comes up and that may be why it starts and revs fine initially.  Check your floats to make sure they "float" but it seems unlikely they would all leak.  Air leak on the intake boots. Assuming you did a good job cleaning the carbs this would be a few possibilities.  Some who know more about needle settings and jets may have other ideas.

Here is what happened. I dropped all the bowls and 1 of the main jet emulsifier had fallen out. No wonder it ran like crap.
